At SMEC, we're helping deliver some of Australia's most significant energy infrastructure projects, supporting utilities, renewable energy developers, government agencies, and private sector clients. Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer - Power & Energy to join our Brisbane team.
This is an exciting opportunity to work across transmission, substations, renewable energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and major grid connection projects while contributing to the development of Australia's evolving energy network.
About the Role
As a Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in the planning, design and delivery of high-voltage power infrastructure projects. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams and industry-leading experts, you will provide technical expertise from feasibility through to detailed design and construction support.
Location: Brisbane
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering transmission line and HV substation engineering design solutions.
- Supporting greenfield and brownfield substation projects across a range of voltage levels.
- Coordinating power system and grid connection studies.
- Preparing technical specifications and conducting equipment assessments.
- Undertaking engineering assurance and technical compliance reviews.
- Supporting tender evaluations and technical bid assessments.
- Providing Owner's Engineer services across major energy infrastructure projects.
- Representing clients at technical workshops, design reviews and stakeholder meetings.
- Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical leadership within the team.
- Promoting Safety in Design, constructability and engineering excellence.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will possess:
Essential
- Proven experience in high-voltage substation design, including both greenfield and brownfield developments.
- Experience designing overhead transmission lines.
- Strong understanding of primary plant systems, substation layouts, earthing design and HV equipment selection.
- Knowledge of protection, control, SCADA and secondary systems.
- Experience delivering projects through feasibility, concept, detailed design and construction support phases.
- Strong client relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentor developing engineers.
Highly Desirable
- Experience across 66kV to 330kV transmission and distribution networks.
- Queensland utility experience, particularly with Powerlink and Energy Queensland.
- Experience supporting renewable energy, BESS and major load connection projects.
- Knowledge of AEMO requirements, the National Electricity Rules (NER), and Generator Performance Standards (GPS).
- Owner's Engineer consultancy experience.
- Experience reviewing EPC contractor designs and technical documentation.
- RPEQ registration or eligibility to obtain RPEQ.
