Assistant Professor - Educational Leadership and Counseling, College of Education and Community Innovation

The Educational Leadership and Counseling Department in the College of Education and Community Innovation at Grand Valley State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of School Counseling beginning August 2027. Qualifications include a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education, or closely related field. ABD candidates will be considered if completed by August 2027, and the candidate has leadership experience. Primary responsibilities include the following: teach graduate courses in the School Counseling program, pursue scholarly interests, and provide service to the university, profession, and community.

Salary & Benefits: $64,000-$66,000, commensurate with experience.

Primary Duties:

• Teach three graduate course equivalents in the Fall and Winter semesters in the School Counseling program
• Willingness to teach in multiple instructional modalities, including face-to-face on the Grand Rapids campus, online synchronous/asynchronous, and hybrid formats
• Supervise graduate students in School Counseling practica and/or internships
• Pursue scholarly activities such as research, publication, writing and professional presentations
• Provide service to the institution (GVSU), profession, and community
• Advise graduate students
• Collaborate with colleagues for curriculum planning and preparation for accreditation
• Travel to school counseling program internship sites when necessary

Required Qualifications and Education:

• Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision, Counselor Education, or closely related field
• Current endorsement as a School Counselor or a current School Counselor license. Successful candidates will need to obtain Michigan School Counselor credentials within 1 year of their hire date (if not previously held)
• Demonstrated potential for university teaching
• Demonstrated interest in pursuing a scholarly agenda
• Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills

 

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

• Successful university teaching experience at the graduate level (especially in school counseling)
• Evidence of accomplishment or strong potential of success in research, publication, grant writing, or scholarly writing
• Comprehensive understanding of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model
• Minimum of two years school counseling experience in a K-12 setting
• School counseling supervision experience
• Evidence of leadership and advocacy for the profession of school counseling
• Evidence of skills in curriculum development, assessment of college/university student learning, higher education accreditation, and clinical and school-based counseling practice

Working Conditions: Typical office environment, some travel may be required
