Geotechnical Engineer – Senior Level (Hybrid)

The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a geotechnical engineer to join our innovative and collaborative team of 90+ geotechnical engineers and geologists. In this hybrid role, you will work on a variety of geotechnical projects that involve traditional geotechnical analysis and design related to slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, foundations, and earth retention. A majority of work will focus on hydraulic structures for clients in the power, public, and mining industries.

The ideal candidate for this position is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their technical ability and project management expertise for a variety of projects. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients.

Your impact – key responsibilities

• Analysis, design, and construction: complete analyses and design related to dams, slope stability and stabilization, seepage, settlement, earth retention, and foundations. Tasks include preparation of plans and specifications, report writing, cost estimating, desktop studies, dam safety inspections, risk analyses, and construction observations.
• Project management support: assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to project managers and clients. Prepare proposals, schedules, and cost estimates for geotechnical investigations and design work.
• Field support: develop geotechnical field investigation plans, assign geotechnical laboratory tests, analyze lab and field data, and support development of geotechnical reports. Perform fieldwork such as construction observation, dam inspections, instrumentation installation and monitoring, and field oversight and inspections and/or support staff in the field.
• Mentorship: provide support through training and/or mentorship for other geotechnical engineer team members.

About the opportunity

• Work location: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Denver, Colorado, office.
• Travel expectation: up to 10 percent domestic fieldwork, with an average of up to five days continuous job site presence.
• Work environment: ability to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you – required core competencies

• Education: bachelor’s degree in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis. A graduate degree in geotechnical engineering is preferred.
• Certification/licensure: a Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to quickly obtain one is preferred.
• Experience:
  • 15 years of relevant experience. Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design disciplines.
  • Extensive experience performing dam safety reviews, evaluations, and inspections for embankment dams.   
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Some tailings dam experience preferred.

• Extensive experience with FERC, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and/or Bureau of Reclamation dam safety and risk informed decision processes and associated technical bulletins. Knowledge of Canadian Dam Association (CDA) dam safety guidelines is beneficial.

• • Familiarity with the design, analysis, and construction of appurtenant structures.
• Willingness and ability to occasionally travel.
• Software: geotechnical software programs, including modules by GeoStudio, RocScience, Itasca, Ensoft, and/or BoreDM.
• Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $121,000–$143,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
