Description
Session: Fall/Winter (September - December)
Position Title:Intern - Range Education and Operations
Location: PLSSSC 14514 Bill Janklow Road Piedmont, SD 57769
Hiring Manager: Anna Klingbeil
Agency:Department of Game, Fish and Parks
Minimum Salary: $18.83
*APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.
Position Description:
Interns will assist with day-to-day operations at the facility, including janitorial tasks and supporting a variety of construction and maintenance projects that may involve using tools, heavy equipment such as skid steers, and 4-wheel drive pickups with trailers. They will help staff build and replace target backers, paint steel targets, empty trash, and provide customer service by answering questions on the range, selling range memberships, and issuing hunting and fishing licenses. A positive, customer focused, can-do attitude is essential for all successful applicants. In addition, interns will complete unique projects specific to their placement, which may include conducting customer surveys or assisting with existing firearms related education programs such as HuntSAFE.
Helpful, though not required, coursework for this internship includes classes in wildlife management, natural resource management, or outdoor education, as well as range or land management. Courses in basic construction, carpentry, welding, or metal fabrication can support the hands-on components of the role, while studies in occupational safety or equipment operation may help interns feel more confident working around tools and machinery. Additionally, coursework in communications, customer service, business, or public interaction can strengthen the customer facing aspects of the position. Criminal justice or firearm related safety courses may also be beneficial, particularly for interns assisting with programs like HuntSAFE.
Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.
