THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a motivated, detail-oriented professional with strong mechanical expertise and a commitment to safe, accurate, and efficient repairs that minimize equipment downtime. They will demonstrate initiative, and sound judgement, while communicating effectively, and working collaboratively. Experience with computerized diagnostic equipment, fleet management software, and preventative maintenance programs is highly desirable, along with a strong work ethic and dedication to excellent internal customer service.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Tustin Public Works Department is responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all public infrastructure and public right-of-way. SELECTION PROCESS

The first step in the selection process is a training and experience evaluation of each candidate based on the application materials submitted. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take a written exam (8/22). Candidates who are determined to be the best qualified will subsequently be invited to participate in a structured panel interview (week of 9/14). Finalists will participate in follow-up interviews (week of 9/22) which will include a practical exercise. Dates are tentative and may change if necessary. 

All candidates who pass the panel interview will earn placement on the eligible list, which is valid for one (1) year and may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification. We anticipate a start date for the position in mid-to-late October.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Inspects and diagnoses major mechanical problems involving City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered construction equipment

• Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment; replaces or repairs components such as generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches

• Tunes up engines, replacing ignition parts; overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, and differentials; diagnoses and repairs computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering and cooling systems

• Repairs, adjusts, and replaces brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes

• Welds, fabricates, and assembles parts and equipment as needed; performs basic body repair work

• Performs emission repairs for applicable City-owned vehicles

• Maintains service and time records related to the work accomplished and materials used; maintains inventory and purchases required parts, materials, and equipment

 

A combination of education, experience, and training that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required for entry into the classification.  A typical combination includes:

Education and/or Experience:

Graduation from high school; and two (2) years of experience performing automotive maintenance and repair work. 

Licenses and/or Certificates:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record and ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within one year of appointment.

Special Requirements: 

Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination, and administrative screening. Subject to random drug/alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation regulations.
