Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program Coordinator II and ETS program leadership, the College and Career Mentor provides direct student outreach, recruitment, mentoring, college and career exposure, and program support services to students at assigned ETS target schools.
The College and Career Mentor represents Educational Talent Search at assigned school sites and plays a significant role in helping the program recruit, engage, and retain eligible participants. The Mentor works closely with Program Coordinators to identify prospective participants, introduce students and families to ETS services, help students complete program applications and required documentation, and conduct consistent follow-up to support successful enrollment.
Once students become participants, the Mentor connects them with ETS services and prepares them for more comprehensive academic, college, career, and postsecondary advising sessions with their assigned Program Coordinator. Mentors promote participation in program services, assist with workshops and educational activities, and support academic and career exposure field trips.
This position expands the Program Coordinator's capacity to provide high-quality services to a large student caseload by supporting recruitment, student engagement, preliminary student preparation, program activities, and follow-up services.
The Mentor will primarily serve students who are first-generation college-bound and/or meet federal income eligibility guidelines and will contribute to the successful implementation of the federally funded Educational Talent Search project and its approved objectives and Absolute Priorities.
Target School Assignment
College and Career Mentors may be assigned to one or more Educational Talent Search target LAUSD schools:
- Fremont High School
- Jefferson High School
- Jordan High School
School assignments may be adjusted based on participant enrollment, recruitment needs, school schedules, staffing, and program priorities.
Work Location: Target School(s) and California State University, Dominguez Hills
Days/Hours: Minimum of 3 days a week, 15-18 hours per week, between 8 am-4 pm
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Recruitment, Outreach & Application Support
- Recruitment is a significant responsibility of the College and Career Mentor. The Mentor will work collaboratively with Program Coordinators to support the program in meeting and maintaining its federally approved participant enrollment objectives.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct regular and ongoing student recruitment activities at assigned target schools throughout the academic year.
- Assist Program Coordinators in identifying prospective students who may meet ETS eligibility requirements.
- Introduce Educational Talent Search to prospective participants and clearly communicate program services, eligibility requirements, expectations, benefits, and opportunities.
- Conduct classroom presentations, tabling activities, lunch-time outreach, informational sessions, student outreach campaigns, and other recruitment activities.
- Develop positive relationships with teachers, counselors, administrators, college and career staff, and other school personnel who can assist with identifying and referring prospective participants.
- Distribute ETS applications and recruitment materials to prospective participants.
- Provide hands-on assistance to students completing ETS applications.
- Review applications with students for completeness before submitting applications to the Program Coordinator for eligibility review and final program processing.
- Follow up with students who have incomplete applications or missing documentation.
- Assist students in obtaining appropriate parent/guardian signatures and required application information.
- Maintain organized records of applications distributed, applications in progress, completed applications, and applications submitted to the Program Coordinator.
- Conduct follow-up outreach with prospective participants who have expressed interest but have not completed the enrollment process.
- Participate in parent events, school events, college and career fairs, registration events, back-to-school activities, and other recruitment opportunities.
- Support targeted recruitment campaigns when additional participants are needed to maintain the program's federally approved participant roster.
- Provide regular recruitment updates to the Program Coordinator, including prospective student contacts, applications distributed, applications completed, pending applications, and follow-up needs.
- Help students complete annual college and/or career-interest assessment.
FIELD TRIPS, CAMPUS VISITS & CAREER EXPOSURE ACTIVITIES
The College and Career Mentor will play an active role in supporting Educational Talent Search field trips and experiential learning activities.
Responsibilities may include:
- Recruit and encourage eligible ETS participants to attend program field trips and activities.
- Assist with student sign-ups, permission forms, attendance confirmation, reminders, and other pre-trip preparation.
- Help students prepare questions and learning goals before college and career exposure activities.
- Assist with student supervision, attendance, check-in, transportation coordination, meals, materials, and other trip logistics.
- Participate in occasional evening, weekend, overnight, and summer activities when required by the program.
WORKSHOPS & PROGRAM SERVICES
- Help recruit students for workshops and other ETS services.
- Conduct reminder and follow-up outreach to increase student participation.
- Assist with workshop registration, attendance, materials, evaluations, and documentation.
- Co-facilitate introductory college and career activities under the direction of the Program Coordinator.
- Assist with academic-year, summer, and special program initiatives.
SUPPORT FOR ETS ABSOLUTE PRIORITIES
Absolute Priority A: High Impact Tutoring
- Encourage eligible participants to utilize ETS academic-support and tutoring services.
- Refer students demonstrating academic difficulty to the Program Coordinator for additional assessment and intervention.
Absolute Priority B: Pre-Apprenticeship & Registered Apprenticeship Access
- Promote apprenticeship-related workshops, field trips, employer presentations, and career exposure opportunities.
- Help identify students interested in skilled trades and apprenticeship pathways and connect them with their Program Coordinator for additional advising.
Absolute Priority C: Pathways to In-Demand, Industry-Recognized Credentials
- Encourage participation in career-related workshops and field trips.
- Help students identify career interests that can be explored further with their Program Coordinator.
- Assist with career exploration activities that expose participants to a variety of educational and workforce pathways.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited college or university, with preference given to students who have completed at least their first year of undergraduate study and are entering or currently in their second year (sophomore) or third year (junior).
- Pursuing a degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Human Services, Child Development, Communications, Liberal Studies, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated interest in education, college access, student mentoring, career development, youth development, or working with first-generation and/or low-income students.
- Must remain in good academic standing at their college or university throughout employment, as applicable.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with first-generation, low-income, underserved, or underrepresented students.
- Experience with TRIO, GEAR UP, college-access, college-readiness, educational opportunities, or similar programs.
- Experience conducting student recruitment and outreach.
- Experience supporting field trips, campus visits, youth programs, or educational events.
- Familiarity with Career and Technical Education, apprenticeship programs, workforce pathways, and industry-recognized credentials.
- Experience using student databases such as Blumen or similar student-information systems.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
