Description
- Uses excellent customer service skills, provides information on and interprets City ordinances, policies, and procedures to the public.
- Observes and reports Municipal Code violations and hazardous conditions.
- Performs administrative support functions.
- Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures and performs related work duties as assigned.
Community Facility Enforcement
- Provides a visible public safety presence at City parks and facilities to promote a safe environment.
- Answers questions regarding programs and services and directs persons to facilities and events.
- Identifies, documents, and reports safety concerns, violations, or hazardous conditions.
- Monitors City facilities during public and private events and enforces rules and regulations.
Station Counter Support
- Provides general customer service at the front desk of the La Mirada Community Sheriff's Station.
- Answers telephone calls for service, inputs and routes calls or messages for deputy and field unit requests.
- Manages counter traffic and takes routine Sheriff's Department reports.
- Conducts Live Scan fingerprints, completes citation corrections, and issues garage sale permits.
Field Support
- Takes routine Sheriff's Department reports.
- Conducts parking enforcement.
- Conducts street sweeper enforcement.
- Assists the public and employees in routine and emergency situations.
- May conduct latent fingerprint investigations at property crime scenes.
- Monitors and maintains radar speed feedback signs.
- Provides traffic assistance for Sheriff Deputies during traffic collisions and/or other traffic related incidents.
The incumbent in this position will be a non-sworn employee of the City of La Mirada and will not be a sworn officer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Availability: Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week.
Knowledge of: Community oriented policing services; public relations and customer service practices; complaint resolution techniques; general law enforcement functions, methods and procedures; positive discipline techniques for youth; safe driving practices; report writing skills; and office methods and procedures.
Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; follow oral and written instructions; comprehend and carry out public safety policies, procedures, and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public, and work within a team-based system; exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with the public and staff; exercise initiative and make sound decisions in accordance with established regulations; work independently, without immediate supervision; present a clean, neat appearance appropriate to successful public contact; and utilize quality customer service skills and techniques. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and work varied shifts, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Experience: Training as an Explorer or work experience in any of the following areas is required: law enforcement related position, military, working with youth, or a position with public contact.
Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent is required. College coursework in Criminal Justice or any P.O.S.T.- certified basic law enforcement training is preferred.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License without suspensions prior to and throughout employment is required.
Possession of a valid CPR, AED and First Aid certificate is required within one month of employment.
