Description

Overview

National Debt Relief is seeking a Compliance Associate to join our Legal and Compliance team. This is an entry-level position designed for a candidate at the start of their legal career who wants to build broad experience across commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, and consumer financial services.

The Compliance Associate supports the company’s legal and compliance functions with a focus on contract review, transactional support, vendor management, and business advisory matters. Working under the supervision of the Compliance Program Manager, the incumbent will take on responsibility quickly and will gain direct exposure to state and federal regulators, examinations, outside counsel, and senior business leadership across multiple business lines.

The ideal candidate is practical, curious, and detail-oriented, exercises sound judgment, and is looking for a role with meaningful responsibility and a clear path to greater ownership. National Debt Relief operates in a highly regulated environment and this position offers unusually broad substantive experience for an attorney early in their career.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City. The incumbent is expected to work from the New York City office a minimum of two days per week. Additional on-site presence may be required during regulatory examinations, audits, and other periods of business need.

Bar Admission:

This position is open to candidates who have graduated from law school and sat for a bar examination with results pending. A candidate hired prior to admission will perform compliance, contract, and business support work under the direction and supervision of the Director of Regulatory Compliance. Prior to admission, the incumbent will not hold themselves out as an attorney, will not independently render legal advice, and will not issue legal opinions on behalf of the Company or its affiliates.

Upon admission to the bar and confirmation of good standing, the incumbent’s scope of responsibility, title, and compensation will be reviewed and adjusted to reflect licensed status. Admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction, and good standing thereafter, is a condition of continued employment in this position. A candidate hired pending admission is expected to obtain admission within twelve months of the date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and revise commercial agreements, including vendor agreements, service agreements, confidentiality agreements, and amendments, and support negotiations under the supervision of the Director of Regulatory Compliance.
  • Prepare compliance analysis of transactional matters for review, including legal, regulatory, operational, privacy, data security, consumer protection, and vendor risk considerations.
  • Support internal stakeholders on contract terms, approval processes, and company policies, escalating matters requiring legal judgment.
  • Partner with business teams to support the full contract lifecycle, from intake and review through negotiation, execution, storage, renewal, and termination.
  • Conduct legal and regulatory research related to business transactions, consumer protection, financial services, privacy, advertising, vendor management, and other applicable areas.
  • Assist with regulatory filings, licensing matters, examinations, audits, investigations, and responses to regulatory inquiries, as needed.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel on transactional, regulatory, and compliance matters.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve legal and compliance processes, reduce risk, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate records of contracts, approvals, legal advice, compliance reviews, and related documentation.
  • Ensure the Policies and Procedures remain compliant and adhered to in all areas.
  • Prioritize open items and manage deadlines effectively to ensure timely completion of all compliance-related tasks.
  • Develop, maintain, and demonstrate current knowledge of applicable State and Federal Laws and Industry Regulations.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; or a law school graduate who has sat for a bar examination with results pending and is eligible for admission in New York.
  • No prior post-graduate legal experience is required. This is an entry-level position and the compensation range reflects that.
  • Law school clinical work, journal or moot court experience, judicial internships, and summer or academic-year work in a regulated industry will be considered favorably.
  • Coursework or experience in consumer financial services, commercial contracting, privacy, or administrative and regulatory law preferred.
  • Ability to analyze regulatory and compliance issues and translate them into practical business guidance.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines independently and to ask for direction when a matter exceeds current experience.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and identify trends.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
