Position Overview

ChristianaCare is seeking a compassionate, customer-focused Patient Transporter I to safely transport patients throughout the hospital while supporting the delivery of exceptional patient care. This role serves as an important link between patients, clinical staff, and support departments by ensuring timely transportation and maintaining transport equipment in a safe and operational condition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients via wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and specialized transport equipment to and from patient care areas and clinical service departments.
  • Respond to transportation requests as assigned by dispatchers and schedulers.
  • Assist clinical staff with transferring patients to and from transport equipment.
  • Support the care, cleaning, and maintenance of departmental equipment.
  • Follow all patient transport protocols and departmental procedures.
  • Attend required educational programs, in-service training sessions, and department meetings.
  • Maintain positive, professional interactions with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare team members.
  • Perform duties in accordance with established safety standards and infection prevention practices.
  • Report unsafe conditions, hazards, equipment issues, or safety concerns to leadership in a timely manner.
  • Protect patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Two (2) years of customer service experience preferred.
  • Healthcare or hospital experience is a plus.
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of hospital departments and locations.
  • Understanding of basic body mechanics and safe patient handling practices.
  • Basic computer skills, including email, online learning platforms, and timekeeping systems.
  • Ability to learn departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively at a high school level.
  • Ability to use smartphones and mobile applications for work assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain positive public relations.
  • Ability to remain courteous, helpful, and service-oriented throughout the workday.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and compassion toward patients and families.
  • Ability to safely transport patients using various transport vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions effectively.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk continuously throughout the shift.
  • Frequent pushing and pulling of transport equipment and patients, often involving considerable weight.
  • Frequent repetitive use of hands, wrists, fingers, and arms.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, lift, and lower equipment and materials as needed.
  • Must successfully pass a back evaluation examination.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent handwashing and adherence to infection prevention protocols.
  • Intermittent exposure to cleaning and disinfecting agents.
  • Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
  • Frequent interaction with patients, family members, nursing staff, clinical personnel, and hospital employees.

This position has a starting rate of $17.80 per hour, regardless of prior experience. After six months of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $20.90 per hour. After one year of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $21.93 per hour.

This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
