Overview
The Transportation Liability Complex Claim Specialist is responsible for prompt and efficient investigation, evaluation and disposition of bodily injury claims through effective research, negotiation and interaction with internal and external counsel, insureds and or claimants. Overall responsibility for formulating proper resolution strategy to ensure optimal outcome. Part of a team that directly handles the largest exposure or severity and the most complex claims.
Responsibilities
- Investigates or ensures appropriate investigation of the claim or coverage, including review and evaluation of underlying facts and circumstances.
- Work with litigation partners to ensure selection and utilization of legal counsel and that optimal resolution strategy is employed. Applies company principles and standards including planning, organizing and monitoring legal panel services and cost in partnership with internal legal counsel.
- Determines, reviews and analyzes coverage. Evaluates coverage issues and risk transfer opportunities.
- Evaluates, establishes, maintains and adjusts appropriate levels of reserves based on facts, company standard and experience.
- When appropriate, retains proper experts to aid in the evaluation, investigation and negotiation of Claims.
- Leverages strong critical thinking and decision-making skills to gather, assess, analyze, question, verify, interpret and understand key or root issues.
- Exhibits expertise in negotiation of claims after gaining effective leverage points to effectuate optimal outcome. Gains trust of other parties to negotiations and demonstrates good sense of timing. Approaches discussions from merits or strengths of case.
- As part of a team, provides insights and input when reviewing claims of others. May be sought out by others for advice.
- Writes in a clear, succinct and fact-based manner in Claims files as well as in other communication.
- Provides for the proper and effective diary entries based on the facts.
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships, gaining respect and trust of internal and external resources and customers.
- Acts in a mentoring role for field office adjusters through roundtable discussions and special projects.
- Keeps current with market trends and demands.
- Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.
- Due to the nature of this role, travel, including overnight travel, is required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of Motor Carrier and/or Commercial Auto claims handling experience, including 5+ in handling complex and/or litigated claims.
- State licensure as required
- Expert in negotiation, investigation and evaluation of claims
- Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office suites
- Demonstrated skills in investigation, evaluation and negotiation
- Strong knowledge of insurance theory and practices
- Periodic travel to attend mediations, trials or other related meetings is required.
- Ability to professionally communicate and interact with internal and external parties; to influence without damaging relationships.
Preferred:
- Multi-line experience.
- Multijurisdictional experience may be required based on specific Line of Business
- CPCU designation, AIC, ARM, or other claims certification preferred.
