What is the opportunity?
The Senior Manager, Business Risk, provides support to RBC Wealth Management (WM) Global Asset Management’s (GAM) Operational Risk management leadership, by providing expertise, advice and counsel, enhancing management’s ability to anticipate and manage operational risks effectively. This includes supporting the design and execution of essential Operational Risk and Regulatory Compliance programs in GAM including risk and control identification/assessment, leading risk reporting and assessments, and supporting other strategic/innovation initiatives.
Reporting to the Director, WM Business Risk, the Senior Manager, Business Risk will lead operational risk/regulatory compliance reviews and provide expert feedback on the operational risk impact of major change initiatives, process improvements, and transformational projects. The successful candidate will maintain critical linkages with Centres of Governance, 2LoD Operational Risk (GRM OR), Compliance, and other critical areas of dependency for GAM to facilitate the exchange of information and integrated solutions to operational risk issues.
What will you do?
Execute Risk & Control Assessments (RCSAs), partnering with business stakeholders to identify and assess key risks and controls, challenge risk assessments, maintain Risk Registers, and develop appropriate actions where risks are outside of appetite.
Lead and support key Operational Risk and Regulatory Compliance programs for Global Asset Management (GAM), including control assessment and testing, regulatory compliance controls, Risk Appetite and Key Risk Indicator monitoring, issue management, operational risk events, and related risk reporting and governance.
Act as a trusted Business Risk advisor to GAM leaders and business partners, providing risk expertise, guidance and constructive challenge on operational risks, controls and emerging risk themes, and helping translate risk requirements into practical business solutions.
Support the ongoing enhancement of GAM’s risk and control environment, including assessment of control design and effectiveness, identification of control gaps and opportunities for improvement, and oversight and challenge of remediation activities through sustainable closure.
Assess operational risk arising from new products, business initiatives, technology and process change, partnering with business and functional stakeholders to identify risks, evaluate controls and recommend appropriate risk mitigation.
Drive innovation and continuous improvement across Business Risk activities by leveraging artificial intelligence, automation, data and emerging technologies to streamline processes, develop new risk management capabilities, and enhance the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of risk analysis, monitoring and reporting.
Prepare and deliver risk analysis, insights and reporting for senior management and governance forums, and collaborate with Group Risk Management, Compliance, Internal Audit and other key partners to identifying trends, emerging risks, control weaknesses and matters requiring management attention or escalation.
Build strong relationships across GAM and key risk partners and promote sound operational risk management practices through effective guidance, knowledge sharing and consistent application of Enterprise Operational Risk Management standards and methodologies.
What do you need to succeed?
Must haves:
5-8 years of relevant experience in Operational Risk, Internal Audit, External Audit, Risk & Controls, Compliance, or a related financial services risk function, with demonstrated experience assessing processes, risks, and control design/operating effectiveness.
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound independent judgement, constructively challenge stakeholders, and navigate complex or ambiguous risk and control matters.
Strong problem solving, analytical (including qualitative and quantitative analysis) and research skills are essential as well as advanced desktop skills (e.g. excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence, advise and build strong relationships with senior management and stakeholders across the business.
Consulting mindset with focus on making strategically aligned business recommendations.
University Degree in business, accounting, finance, economics or a related discipline. A professional designation such as CPA, CA, CFA or other relevant risk/audit and finance designation is strongly preferred.
Nice-to-have:
Excellent knowledge of Wealth Management and RBC’s products, processes, and organization.
Knowledge of asset management, investment management operations or wealth management, with an understanding of front-, middle- and back-office processes.
Experience with data analytics, automation, artificial intelligence or other emerging technologies to enhance risk management, control testing, monitoring, reporting or process efficiency.
Familiarity with Canadian and/or U.S. regulatory and compliance requirements applicable to asset management and investment management businesses.
