GIS Specialist – Entry Level (Hybrid)

The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a GIS specialist to join our team in Seattle. This position involves GIS work including map and figure creation, data formatting and editing, data management, data analysis, and quality control. This person will act as the primary internal consultant for GIS projects in the office where they are based. Responsibilities will include identifying, determining, and communicating GIS best practices and resources to support technical solutions for both internal and external clients.

Project responsibilities may include working with and interpreting aerial photos, performing analysis of both raster and vector data, completing database entries and queries, performing database management, working with internet map applications, coordinating GIS work with other software applications (AutoCAD, Google Earth), and using standard GIS extensions. The person in this position will primarily work on projects for large clients in the fuels and mining industries, working with a variety of teams to provide high-quality GIS products and exceptional client service.

Your impact – key responsibilities

• Map and figure creation: develop clear, accurate maps and figures for project reports and presentations using ArcGIS Pro.
• Spatial data analysis and development: perform analyses, georeferencing, and digitizing of raster and vector data using standard Esri ArcGIS extensions.
• Database management: maintain and organize geospatial databases, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
• Quality control: review and verify data and cartographic outputs for accuracy and completeness.
• Collaboration: work closely with project teams and GIS specialists to deliver high-quality results.

About the opportunity

• Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Seattle, Washington, office.  

• Travel expectation: be willing to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs.

About you – required core competencies

• Education: bachelor’s or master’s degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, or a related field.
• Software: strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software. Knowledge of and experience with Esri’s ArcGIS for Desktop 10.x Suite and/or ArcGIS Pro and Google Earth.
• Working style: strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Detail-oriented, thorough, and organized approach.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Compensation: anticipated range of $65,000–$75,000/year. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
