Grounds Maintenance Technician

This position provides operational and maintenance support to the City’s parks, buildings, sports fields, roundabouts, streetscape landscaping, equipment and grounds; and provides responsive, courteous, and efficient customer service in support of departmental operations.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. 

1. Performs routine grounds maintenance including lawn mowing, weed whipping, lawn repair, landscape maintenance, tree and shrub pruning, and trash removal. 
2. Operates lawn equipment including mowers, weed trimmers, snow blowers, hand tools, and power tools for assigned areas.
3. Cleans, lubricates, and performs preventive maintenance or repair on small equipment.
4. Mows infield; drags, lines, chalks, and prepares baseball, softball and soccer athletic fields.
5. Maintains appearance of all parks to ensure areas are free of fallen tree limbs and other debris.
6. Assists in the maintenance and troubleshooting of irrigation systems.
7. Performs light building maintenance and repair as well as new construction projects as assigned.
8. Assists with the set-up and takedown for special events, exhibits, or displays.
9. Performs snow removal.
10. Assists with tree removal, branch clearing and chipper operations, planting flowerbeds, trees, and shrubs.
11. Assists with maintenance and repair of buildings, ancillary structures, irrigation system, pathways, and roadways.
12. Ability to work occasional weekends and Holidays as assigned.
13. Other duties as assigned.  

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Two (2) years grounds maintenance, light equipment operation, and customer service experience. 
• One (1) year experience in Landscaping including lawn mowing, string trimming, shrub trimming, plant & bed care, flower plantings and snow removal.
• Operate motorized vehicles (e.g. 4x4 pickup truck with plow, lift gate pickup truck), light equipment (e.g. ZTR Mowers, 4x4 Tractors) and hand tools.
• DOT medical card, or ability to obtain within 1 month.
• Valid Michigan Driver's License with no more than 4 points currently on record.
• Basic proficiency with office computers and related applications.

• Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
• Work is performed at city buildings and outside.
• Exposures include working around moving mechanical parts.
• Worker is exposed to seasonal extreme outside weather conditions.

Note Regarding Starting Wage: Each position at the City of Rochester Hills has an assigned Pay Grade consisting of 6 steps.  New employees generally start at Step 1 to allow for growth and wage progression, aligned with the City’s annual review process. The City will evaluate the applicant’s skills and experience to determine whether a higher Step placement is appropriate.
