SIGN TECHNICIAN II

The purpose of this position is to install and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings for the County.  Incumbents provide lead guidance, direction, and training to Sign Technician I.  

• Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers; confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations. 
• Leads and participates in the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs in compliance with established local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and standards. Removes old signs and posts; responds to emergency calls; maintains daily record of installs and work locations; inspects traffic signs; and performs needed cleaning, repairs, or replacements.
• Leads and participates in the installation and maintenance of road markings in compliance with established local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and standards; operates paint truck to install roadway striping; drives follow-up truck during roadway striping operations; paints and stencils traffic pavement markings; operates spray gun and roller; prepares work site; and mixes and loads paint.
• Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
• Maintains equipment and work areas; cleans and maintains spray equipment; cleans and maintains vehicles; cleans shop; and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment. 
• Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments. Operates paint truck, spray gun, roller, and other equipment as needed. 
• Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
• Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Education and Experience:

Requires a High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of related experience in installing and maintaining road signs and markings or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). Must possess and maintain Signs & Markings Level II from the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA).

• Knowledge of local government operations, transportation related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
• Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas bymeans of the spoken word and have close visual acuity. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, heights, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, or rude/irate customers. The noise level in the work environment may be at times moderate to loud.
