Junior Software Developer
Job Purpose:
Our client is seeking a motivated individual to enter the professional software development field within a regulated payment environment. The successful candidate must be able to write working code, ask thoughtful questions, communicate blockers honestly, and learn quickly under senior mentorship. Technical depth is less important than a strong ability to learn, effective communication, discipline, and attention to detail.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver defined, clearly scoped development tasks to completion under the guidance of senior developers.
- Write basic SQL queries and develop an understanding of Oracle and PostgreSQL stored procedures with mentorship.
- Write unit tests for all code produced and carefully check work before requesting a review.
- Early success measure: The first merged pull request is expected within 20 days of starting. The candidate must be comfortable learning within a structured 30-day onboarding programme and actively participating in code reviews.
- Surface blockers within one working day and clearly communicate what has been attempted and what assistance is required.
- Participate in code reviews as a reviewer from Sprint 2 onwards.
- Write clear commit messages and pull request descriptions explaining what was changed and why.
- Attend and contribute prepared input to sprint planning sessions and retrospectives.
- Use Microsoft Teams for team coordination and respond within four working hours during core working hours.
- Complete the 30-day onboarding programme covering payments, the codebase, development processes, and squad norms.
- Develop a basic understanding of PCI-DSS requirements, including awareness of information that must never appear in logs or error messages.
Qualifications & Experience:
- NQF Level 6 National Diploma or NQF Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Relevant professional certification, such as Microsoft Technology Associate, AWS Cloud Practitioner, or equivalent, will be advantageous.
- Final-year students in their last semester may be considered for a start date after graduation. Candidates must provide their expected graduation date and current academic transcript.
- 3–5 years of software development exposure. Internships, graduate programmes, academic projects, and credible self-directed work may be considered.
- A genuine academic or personal software development project must be available for discussion or review. The project does not need to be production-grade but must demonstrate independent work and should not simply be a copied tutorial.
