Assistant Director of Engineering – Resort

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Engineering supports the Director of Engineering in overseeing the resort's physical plant, ensuring guest rooms, public spaces, mechanical systems, and grounds are maintained to the highest standards of safety, functionality, and appearance. This role provides hands-on leadership to the engineering team, manages preventive maintenance programs, and helps drive capital projects and energy-efficiency initiatives while ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and brand standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in leading, scheduling, and supervising the engineering and maintenance staff across all shifts, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance management.
• Oversee daily maintenance operations for guest rooms, public areas, kitchens, laundry, pools/spas, and back-of-house facilities.
• Manage and maintain preventive maintenance (PM) programs for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, life safety, elevators, boilers, chillers, and pool/water systems.
• Respond to and resolve guest-impacting maintenance issues promptly and professionally.
• Support the Director of Engineering in budgeting, forecasting, and controlling departmental expenses, labor, and inventory.
• Coordinate and supervise outside contractors and vendors for specialized repairs, renovations, and capital projects.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, local fire/life safety codes, environmental regulations, and brand engineering standards.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, permits, equipment logs, and safety documentation.
• Participate in energy management and sustainability initiatives to control utility costs.
• Act as Director of Engineering in their absence, including manager-on-duty coverage as needed.
• Support emergency preparedness planning and lead the response to facility emergencies (power outages, storms, system failures).
• Conduct regular property walkthroughs to proactively identify maintenance and safety concerns.
• Assist with room renovation, refresh, and capital improvement projects from planning through completion.

Qualifications

Education / Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in engineering, facilities management, or related field preferred.
• 5+ years of progressive maintenance/engineering experience in a hotel, resort, or large commercial facility, including 2+ years in a supervisory role.
• Trade license or certification a plus (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or Chief Engineer certification).

Skills / Knowledge

• Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, pool/spa systems, and building automation systems.
• Understanding of fire/life safety systems and local building/safety codes.
• Proven leadership, team-building, and staff development skills.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office.
• Excellent communication and guest service skills.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and on-call/emergency response.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in varied environmental conditions (heat, cold, heights, confined spaces).
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the property for extended periods.
