Description
Ergon is seeking a Data Analytics Intern to support the Energy & Specialty Solutions (E&SS) business unit. The intern will gain hands-on experience building data-driven reporting and visualization tools to answer practical business questions and support informed decision-making for one of the E&SS companies.
This role is designed for an analytical, curious student who wants to build both technical and business acumen. The intern will work with the E&SS Business Optimization team and cross-functional stakeholders to develop reports, analyze performance, identify trends, and communicate actionable insights related to commercial, financial, supply chain, and operational priorities.
The internship will be offered through Mississippi State University's Workforce Scholars Initiative. The student will work remotely through the program while supporting the E&SS team, with a weekly schedule coordinated around coursework.
Key Responsibilities
Power BI, Reporting & Visualization
- Assist in developing and maintaining intuitive, visually clean Power BI reports and dashboards.
- Translate business questions and stakeholder requirements into useful metrics, visualizations, and reporting solutions.
- Prepare and organize data using tools such as Power BI, Excel and approved E&SS data sources.
- Support report testing, documentation, user feedback, and ongoing improvements.
Business Partnership
- Collaborate with stakeholders across business optimization, sales, marketing, finance, supply chain, operations, and planning.
- Participate in discussions to understand business processes, reporting needs, and how analytics supports E&SS decisions.
- Communicate findings through concise summaries, presentations, and dashboards tailored to the audience.
Data & Development Practices
- Follow established standards for report design, KPI definitions, data security, documentation, and quality.
- Build familiarity with Power BI Service, Microsoft Fabric, shared workspaces, and other approved analytics tools.
- Use structured development practices and, as appropriate, AI-enabled tools to improve productivity and solution quality.
Business Analytics & Decision Support
- Analyze business performance across areas such as sales, demand, inventory, supply chain, pricing, margins, and financial results.
- Identify trends, variances, risks, and opportunities, and summarize findings in a clear, business-focused manner.
- Perform data validation and quality checks to improve the accuracy and reliability of reporting.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled at Mississippi State University and eligible to participate in the Workforce Scholars Initiative.
- Pursuing a degree in Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, Computer Science, Supply Chain, or a related field.
- Foundational understanding of data analysis and visualization.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to learn new technologies and business concepts.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively and applying feedback.
- Availability to work 15-20 hours per week during the Spring 2027 semester.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework, personal projects, or internship experience using Power BI or another data-visualization tool.
- Strong Excel skills; exposure to Power Query, SQL, Python, DAX, relational databases, or Microsoft Fabric is helpful but not required.
- Interest in commercial analytics, financial analysis, supply-chain planning, energy, refining, manufacturing, or specialty products.
- Ability to turn analysis into a clear story for business users and decision-makers.
- Interest in AI tools to support analysis, automation, and solution development.
