Description

At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.

This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

Your role and responsibilities

Details:

  • Period: Feb – July
  • Number of credits:  30 ECTS
  • Number of students for this thesis work: 1
  • Location: Västerås and possibly also the University premises.

You will be part of Materials Technology & Electromagnetics team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden. At Corporate Research we lead the innovation within ABB and our task is to ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in the future. We work in close collaboration with other research centers, our business areas: Motion, Automation and Electrification, as well academic and industrial partners. In our creative and highly skilled team we develop, design, build and test new concepts and prototypes of physical and digital powertrains or electrical devices.

Metal additive manufacturing is increasingly being adopted by industry and parts are typically machined before assembly. In this project, we set up a digital twin of the part to build the real geometry including as-built surface. The work involves using available process simulation tools to predict geometry, validation using 3D scanning and FE simulation for certain load scenarios. The scope of the work will be tuned based on the technical background of the student.

Qualifications for the role

  • Technical background in materials, mechanical engineering, physics or similar.
  • Understanding of basic solid mechanics concepts
  • FEM simulation in ANSYS or equivalent
  • Coding skill is a plus but not mandatory, please comment in the cover letter.
  • Proficient in speaking and writing in English is mandatory.
  • Strong team spirit and individual leadership to deliver expected results on time and with high quality.
