Description
Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Coordinator to support construction activities at an active mining operation in Northern Ontario.
The project involves the construction of a three-storey administrative facility, including structural steel erection, concrete work, building enclosure, architectural finishes, and mechanical and electrical installations.
The HSE Coordinator will be responsible for administering the project's health and safety management program, ensuring compliance with Ontario occupational health and safety legislation, and actively promoting safe work practices across the construction site.
This position combines safety program administration with field-level inspections and hazard identification. The successful candidate must possess practical construction site safety experience and the ability to recognize and address hazards proactively.
Key Responsibilities
-
Administer and maintain the project's health and safety management program in accordance with established procedures.
-
Ensure compliance with Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), applicable regulations, and site-specific safety requirements.
-
Conduct regular site inspections to identify unsafe conditions, potential hazards, and opportunities for corrective action.
-
Complete and document incident investigations, including identifying root causes and recommending preventative measures.
-
Prepare, review, and maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Construction Hazard Analyses (CHAs), and other required safety documentation.
-
Coordinate safety documentation and approvals required before construction activities commence.
-
Verify that appropriate permits, safety plans, and hazard assessments are in place before work begins.
-
Monitor ongoing construction activities to ensure safe work practices are consistently followed.
-
Support site orientations, safety meetings, toolbox talks, and other safety communication initiatives.
-
Maintain accurate safety records, inspection reports, and incident documentation.
-
Complete safety-related data entry and reporting using HammerTech safety management software.
-
Coordinate with site supervisors, subcontractors, and project management to resolve safety concerns.
-
Support subcontractor compliance with established safety requirements and documentation standards.
-
Promote a proactive safety culture through regular communication, coaching, and field engagement.
Qualifications & Experience
-
Approximately 3–4 years or more of hands-on HSE experience within construction or industrial environments.
-
Previous experience working on active mining construction sites is strongly preferred.
-
Demonstrated ability to identify and assess field-level safety hazards, not solely administer safety documentation.
-
Strong working knowledge of Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable construction regulations.
-
Experience preparing and reviewing Job Hazard Analyses, hazard assessments, and safe work procedures.
-
Practical experience conducting site inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
-
Experience administering formal construction safety management programs.
-
National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification is a significant asset but is not mandatory.
-
Experience with HammerTech or comparable safety management software is an asset.
-
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with trades, subcontractors, and site leadership.
-
Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and proactively address safety concerns.
Working Conditions & Project Details
-
Approximately 11-month contract, anticipated to conclude in September 2027.
-
Rotational site schedule, anticipated to be 8 days on and 6 days off.
-
Work takes place within an active mining operation with multiple construction trades operating simultaneously.
-
Camp accommodations and meals are provided during site rotations.
-
Candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the project site.
-
The position involves both office-based safety administration and active field inspections.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a practical, field-oriented safety professional who understands the realities of construction operations and can balance regulatory compliance with day-to-day site execution.
While approximately 60% of the role involves safety administration, documentation, and planning, the remaining 40% requires active field engagement, hazard recognition, and verification of safe work practices.
Candidates with mining construction experience, strong knowledge of Ontario safety legislation, and the confidence to independently identify and address site hazards will be particularly well suited to this opportunity.
