Job Description Summary:

The primary role of a Clinical Nurse Lead is to ensure that all nursing functions within the department run smoothly and efficiently. Provide guidance and support to help staff through challenging situations as they arise and ensure staff adheres to workplace protocols and procedures. The Clinical Nurse Lead reports to the management team, Clinical Manager and Director, for their designated unit. The employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in the daily management of departmental operations, scheduling, and staffing needs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of nursing and hospital policies and procedures to interpret, assist with, and teach specific procedures to the staff.
  • Maintains standards of patient care according to age-specific needs, assessment, acuity, plan of care, and competency of assigned available personnel.
  • Assists, trains, evaluates employee performance, participates in coaching, and provides feedback as a frontline member of the management team.
  • Responsible for rounds on the nursing unit and for keeping informed of all critical and/or acutely ill patients.
  • Promotes professional nursing behavior and collaborates with multi-disciplinary resources to coordinate patient care.
  • Ensures that staffing plans provide appropriate staff numbers and skill mix necessary to provide safe and high-quality patient care.
  • Ensures bedside shift report is conducted with each change of shift.
  • Ensures compliance with completion of patient’s communication board (whiteboard) to include name, date, goals or care, support staff, and procedures or test for the day; keeping patients and families informed and involved in care.
  • Leads unit huddles and debriefs including but not limited to multidisciplinary huddles and discharge planning process.
  • Investigate patient, family, and physician concerns and take appropriate action if immediate action is required; if not, refer concerns to the Clinical Manager or Department Director.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and order adequate supplies and equipment necessary for the delivery of quality patient care.
  • Assures that the department operates in a manner conducive to positive patient, public, physician, and employee relations through efficient systems, supportive communications, and effective problem-solving.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining the budget including productivity to ensure the cost-effectiveness of operations.
  • Responds and assist in all “Code Blue” calls on assigned units.
  • Promotes professional growth by actively contributing to the development of employees through delegation, supervision, and education.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Completion of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • Additional educational preparation in leadership skills is desirable.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
  • Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.
  • BLS/ACLS/PALS/NRP or certification as required by the specific department must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • Additional certifications/competencies may be required at the department's discretion.

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 2 years continuous, current hospital nursing experience preferred.
  • Participation in the HR Leadership, Training, & Development for Managers preferred.
  • Previous management and supervisor experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the nursing profession as normally acquired through the completion of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Possesses effective leadership skills through communication, problem-solving, and decision-making ability
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities including the ability to work under stressful situations
