Art Department Lab Assistant Student Employee #1210

Overview:

The Art Department Lab Assistant Student Employee is responsible for monitoring the Ceramics, 2D/3D Design and Drawing/Painting studios during open studio times. Student employees are expected to help maintain a safe, organized and productive studio. Duties include mixing clay, mixing glazes, loading and unloading gas and electric kilns, answering phones, cleaning/organizing, setting up for art shows, assist with special projects (building), and other job related duties.

Campus Location: Des Plaines

Length of Employment: Prefer someone who can work multiple semesters.

Hours Available:

Monday: 8:45 am- 5:30 pm

Tuesday: 4:00 pm- 10:00 pm

Wednesday: 8:45 am- 2:00 pm

Saturday: 8:45 am- 5:00 pm

Schedule Flexibility: Usually determined around class schedule (flexible)

 

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities (TDRs) and Learning Outcomes:

- Monitor Studio and make sure safe practices are being followed (LD)

- Mix clay, glazes and other materials for classes (CD)

- Learn to load/unload and fire gas and electric kilns (CD, CT)

- Serve as a resource person to students during open studio times (CM, LD)

- Answer phones (CM, TC)

- Work with Art Department Staff collecting/setting up artwork for exhibitions (TW)

- Provide customer service and maintain an organized/clean studio (PF)

 

Candidate Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities or KSOAs)

- Must be enrolled at Oakton College in at least 6 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. Employed over the summer is allowed for students taking at least 1 credit class during the summer, or students continuing registration into the following fall semester.

- Must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher and be in good standing at Oakton College.

- Eligible to work in the United States.

- Some experience taking art classes (ceramics preferred)

- Experience with tools.

- Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
