Job Description

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Director of Advising, College of Sciences [R0153477].

ROLE of the POSITION

The Director of Advising in the College of Sciences provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to a robust Center, providing advising services to over 2500 major, minor, and prospective undergraduate students.

As the Director of Advising, you will lead a dynamic, student-centered unit responsible for delivering high-quality academic advising, student success initiatives, and proactive advising strategies that directly impact retention, progression, and completion across departments. This role requires coordination with academic and administrative partners to ensure advising services align with evolving program & institutional goals.

The Director oversees all aspects of advising operations, including:

Leadership and Supervision: Guiding, developing, and evaluating a large team of administrative faculty and support staff; fostering a collaborative and supportive culture focused on student success.

Strategic Management: Establishing and enforcing unit policies and ensuring the center’s structure and processes meet the needs of a diverse and high-demand student population.

Student Support and Advising: Providing direct advising to undergraduate and prospective students as needed; ensuring consistent application of advising policies and degree requirements.

Partnership and Advocacy: Representing the Advising Center and the College of Sciences at university-level committees and events; advocating for the unique needs of students and programs.

Curriculum and Policy Collaboration: Partnering with faculty and administration to align advising practices with curricular changes, accreditation requirements, and student success priorities.

All positions in Academic Affairs contribute to our core mission: to increase enrollment and promote equitable student success. This position shall coordinate with the Assistant Dean of Student Success and Undergraduate Programs to set annual goals that align with Top Tier initiatives and the strategic goals of the College. Like all AA leaders, this position plays a large role in enrollment growth, removing barriers to student success, ensuring inclusive and equitable access to resources, working to eliminate achievement gaps, and providing outstanding service across the student life cycle.

It is expected that this role will be filled by an individual who subscribes to and exemplifies the university’s core values in all interactions; demonstrates professionalism and collegiality; is collaborative and a team player; is ethical, transparent, and abides by all university, NSHE, and State laws, policies, and procedures as appropriate to the position; and embraces inclusion to promote belongingness for students, faculty, staff, community partners, and campus guests.

Administrative faculty positions, especially those in leadership roles, require some evening and/or weekend work and occasional travel.

BACKGROUND SCREENING

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment criminal background and/or credit check.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a master’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), five years of professional work experience in academic advising, and five years of supervisory experience in advising/student success. Credentials must be obtained by the employment start date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Professional and supervisory experience in a STEM-based advising and student success environment.
