JOB SUMMARY:
The Health Information Specialist 2 is responsible for performing analysis of records for inpatient, outpatient, observation, outpatient surgery, Emergency Department, and clinic records. This position may assist with various technical functions that are completed by the Health Information Specialist I, including but not limited to birth certificates, release of information intake, scanning, indexing, importing, quality checks, etc.This is a remote position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key Responsibilities:
- Review, organize, and maintain patient medical records in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of health information.
- Respond to requests for patient information from patients, healthcare providers, insurers, and legal entities in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
- Assist in data entry, record abstraction, and report generation to support clinical, administrative, and research activities.
- Monitor compliance with documentation and coding standards.
- Work collaboratively with clinical staff to resolve discrepancies or incomplete records.
- Support audits and quality improvement initiatives by preparing required documentation.
- Maintain logs, databases, and filing systems for tracking and managing records.
- Stay current on laws, regulations, and technology affecting health information management.
- Upload medical records into the EMR from various sources
- Assign deficiencies as needed in the EMR for missing documentation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: (experience and education)
Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned by Leadership Team Member.
Experience:
1-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting or medical records department, required.
Experience with EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech) is a plus.
Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Sciences, or related field preferred.
Certifications (Preferred but not required):
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS)
Skills and Competencies:
Strong understanding of HIPAA and patient privacy regulations.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and health information systems.
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work independently or as part of a team.
Strong time management skills Ability to perform basic data entry in Microsoft Word and excel is a plus
Continuous oral communication and clear speech required
Ability to prioritize work, complete tasks within prescribed time, and flexible with time and changing tasks.
Frequent bending may be required for some duties
The ability to read, understand and reiterate regulatory requirements, hospital medical staff rules and regulations.
The ability to respond correctly to a multitude of information requests

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The ability to perform work at a computer terminal for 6-8 hours a day and function in an environment with constant interruptions is required.
