Health Information Specialist

Position Summary

The Health Information Specialist plays an important role in protecting the integrity, accuracy, and confidentiality of patient health information. This position is responsible for maintaining electronic medical records, processing requests for medical information, supporting quality improvement initiatives, and assisting with regulatory compliance activities. Working closely with clinical and administrative staff, the Health Information Specialist helps ensure that medical records are complete, secure, and compliant with HIPAA and other applicable state and federal regulations.

What You'll Do

As a Health Information Specialist, you'll help ensure our patients' medical records are accurate, complete, and readily available to support high-quality care. Your responsibilities will include:

• Process requests for medical records and Release of Information (ROI) in accordance with HIPAA, agency policy, and applicable regulations.
• Scan, organize, index, and maintain electronic medical records within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
• Review medical records for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
• Prepare patient and provider correspondence related to health information.
• Complete chart audits and respond to requests from insurance companies and other authorized entities.
• Assist with quality improvement initiatives, including Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) activities and other organizational reporting requirements.
• Support compliance with the 340B Drug Pricing Program through documentation reviews and audits.
• Participate in compliance reviews, regulatory audits, and internal quality assurance activities.
• Maintain departmental files, reports, and databases.
• Participate in training, committee work, and ongoing professional development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Valid New York State driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of experience in a medical office or healthcare setting.
• Experience working with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
• Familiarity with HIPAA regulations, medical records, or health information management.
