Job Description

As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.

About the Role:

The Electrical Design Engineer develops and maintains electrical, instrumentation and control system designs for the Process Analytics product portfolio, ensuring products meet customer, safety, performance and global regulatory requirements. The role works across pre-sales, order delivery, product sustaining and new product development to resolve design issues and support reliable product integration.

Working closely with mechanical, systems, operations, quality, service and commercial teams, the role supports customer-specific engineering, product configuration, engineering change control and manufacturing execution from concept through build, test, commissioning and field support.

What You'll Do:

  • Undertake electrical, instrumentation and control system designs from concept through to commissioning.

  • Design 1-phase and 3-phase low-voltage electrical systems, switchgear and instrumentation for industrial and mining applications.

  • Design products for harsh mining environments and incorporate appropriate protection against EMC/EMI, surges, power-line fluctuations and short circuits.

  • Liaise with key stakeholders during the pre-sales phase and complete technical reviews of system requirements, tender documentation and customer specifications within agreed timeframes.

  • Apply Australian and international engineering standards and customer design standards as appropriate.

  • Comply with relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, corporate policies and ethical standards.

  • Prepare project- and product-related documentation, design records and progress reports.

  • Develop electrical schematics, control-panel layouts, wiring diagrams and detailed production drawings required for manufacturing.

  • Check manufacturing drawings for completeness, correctness and conformance with specifications and applicable standards.

  • Participate in peer reviews and design-verification activities for assigned projects.

  • Maintain product configurations, detailed component specifications and equipment designs in the global product data management (PDM) system.

  • Consult with local and global cross-functional teams to determine optimum design and integration solutions.

  • Design plant interfaces for seamless integration with customers' process control systems using industrial communication protocols such as Profinet, Profibus, OPC and Modbus.

  • Select automation controllers, PLCs and SCADA components and integrate and program these control systems as required.

  • Design internal and external cable assemblies for low-voltage control systems and complete panel-layout and load-rating calculations.

  • Evaluate vendor proposals, select components against technical specifications, maintain approved manufacturer information and support BOM release and maintenance in the ERP system.

  • Liaise with electrical and electronic suppliers, contract manufacturers and internal manufacturing teams to provide technical support for released designs.

  • Conduct technical risk analyses, prepare First Article Inspection (FAI) test reports and troubleshoot design issues identified during FAI.

  • Work closely with production and validation teams during system build, outbound quality control, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).

  • Execute Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and electrical/electronic production change requests in accordance with configuration-control processes.

  • Generate engineering documentation, including design-validation reports, test procedures, specifications, technical and user manuals, and clear instructions for field changes and upgrades.

  • Work with Project Management to coordinate scope, schedule, inventory and technical deliverables to meet quality, delivery and cost targets.

  • Support product-sustaining activities and continuous improvement by maintaining and reviewing existing products, designs and project outcomes.

  • Provide electrical design, troubleshooting and design-for-manufacturability support to production and operations teams.

  • Contribute to R&D, new product development, marketing and custom-engineering projects as required.

  • Create, upload and maintain bills of material and related engineering data for internal and global manufacturing locations.

  • Participate in supplier qualifications and audits and support supplier-quality performance and non-conforming-material disposition activities.

  • Maintain a practical understanding of the Process Analytics product portfolio and provide engineering support across product lines as required.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic Engineering or a related discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years work experience in an appropriate engineering role. Experience in minerals processing, slurry transportation, materials handling and/or heavy industry would be desirable but not essential.

  • Sound understanding of fundamental electrical and electronic engineering principles.

  • Knowledge of PLC programming or another relevant structured programming language.

  • Experience supporting product development from concept through to production and product sustaining.

  • Experience designing electrical/electronic and pneumatic control systems for harsh environments, including EMC/EMI and surge protection.

  • Ability to understand and apply Australian and international electrical, electronic and systems-engineering standards, including CE and CSA requirements.

  • Experience with industrial automation and communication protocols such as Profibus, Profinet, OPC, Industrial Ethernet and Modbus.

  • Experience in instrumentation and electrical system design, including cables, reticulation, specifications and control-panel layouts.

  • Circuit design experience using modern engineering practices.

  • Practical hands-on experience with electrical wiring and troubleshooting electrical and electronic systems.

  • Experience with electro-pneumatic, embedded-system and low-voltage mains-power design.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of variable-frequency drives, AC/DC motors, motor-control centres and PLC layout and development.

  • Familiarity with engineering change control, product data management, ERP systems, bills of material and approved manufacturer lists.

  • Ability to produce project documentation and engineering reports, including design specifications, test procedures, verification and validation reports, and technical/user manuals.

  • Ability to prepare clear instructions for field changes and upgrades and provide technical support to Customer Service and Field Service Engineers.

  • Proficiency with modern electrical and electronic design tools; experience with SolidWorks, EPLAN and AutoCAD is desirable.

  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, with a focus on clear communication of design intent to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong time-management and teamwork skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet critical timelines.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Adhere to OHS policies and procedures and ensure a safe and healthy workplace environment, in particular ensuring that the principles of hazard management are followed, including regular SOTs and reporting hazards as soon as they become apparent.
