Metrocare is the largest provider of mental health services in North Texas, serving over 55,000 adults and children annually. For over 50 years, Metrocare has provided a broad array of services to people with mental health challenges and developmental disabilities. In addition to behavioral health care, Metrocare provides primary care centers for adults and children, services for veterans and their families, accessible pharmacies, housing, and supportive social services. Alongside clinical care, researchers and teachers from Metrocare’s Altshuler Center for Education & Research are advancing mental health beyond Dallas County while providing critical workforce to the state.

Job Description:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The mission of Metrocare Services is to serve our neighbors with developmental or mental health challenges by helping them find lives that are meaningful and satisfying.  We are an agency committed to quality gender-responsive, trauma-informed care to individuals experiencing serious mental illness, development disabilities, and co-occurring disorders. Metrocare programs focus on the issues that matter most in the lives of the children, families, and adults we serve.  

The Health and Safety Associate (HSA) is a member of the business operations team. They are responsible for working with families and adults in treatment in a manner that is trauma-informed and responsive to needs, culture, and gender. The HSA is responsible for ensuring a safe and trauma-informed environment of care.

The HSA is responsible for maintaining a safe environment of care and performing health and safety duties as assigned at each agency site. Their duties include community engagement, involvement in the emergency response to various incidents, routine checks of facility, grounds, and parking areas to mitigate and report health and safety hazards, safety inspections, lock and alarm checks, incident reporting, and other duties as assigned by the Business Office Coordinator or designated supervisor. Shift hours and job duties may change to support the needs of the agency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides high quality, visible customer service and engages in a friendly, helpful manner with staff, individuals in services, and other visitors.
  • Observes lobbies for visitors exhibiting changes in behaviors, thoughts, or feelings, in order to connect the individual with appropriate clinical staff, as needed.
  • Performs health and safety patrols, which include interior and exterior checks of all facilities at site to optimize campus safety. 
  • Responds to non-police emergency calls to include (but not limited to) fire & security alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills and leaks, pedestrian, or vehicular traffic control.
  • Perform reports/documentation to include (but not limited to) Health and Safety Reports, Vendor Logs, Janitor Logs, Weekly Site Safety Inspections, Weekly Cleaning Checklist, and any others, as they are needed.
  • Performs a Weekly Site Safety Inspection to include (but not limited to) the checking of fire equipment condition, locks and alarm devices, and any other potential hazards.
  • Enhance organization by analyzing operating practices, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • As building safety or repair needs are identified, enters work orders, coordinates with Facilities, and monitors work order statuses to ensure a resolution within 48 business hours.
  • Conducts and documents monthly drills in accordance with the drill schedule established in the site’s Environment of Care Manual. 
  • Conducts and documents the Environment of Care Scan for their site once per quarter.
  • Utilizes Mental Health First Aid skills to mediate conflicts or confrontations between agency staff, visitors, individuals served, or other persons at assigned site.
  • Assists individuals by answering questions and providing directions to proper building or office.
  • Documents & reports suspicious activity.
  • Enhance organization by analyzing operating practices, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Attends all training and meetings, as directed.
  • Provides walking escort as requested.
  • Responsible for the opening/closing of a clinic/building to ensure building security.
  • Use of two-way radios and cell phones to communicate with other staff on-site.
  • Responds to biohazardous incidents and performs supplemental sanitizing cleanings, as needed.
  • Maintain attendance with your designated shift established by the Supervisor and communicate in the event this cannot be met.
  • Is knowledgeable about and remains in compliance with internal and external policies, procedures, regulations, and standards, including, for example, all Metrocare policies and procedures related to the environment of care and all applicable regulatory standards.
  • Submit all timecards accurately and timely.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES, AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduate or GED with a minimum requirement of 1 to 2 years of customer service experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

DRIVING REQUIRED: No    

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Basic math skills required.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in interacting with internal/external customers.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to utilize Internet for resources.

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. Due to the multi-site responsibilities of this position the incumbent must be able to carry equipment and supplies (up to 15 pounds). 

The position requires standing and/or walking in excess of 7 hours a day.

NOTICE ON POSITIONS THAT REQUIRE TRAVEL TO/FROM VARIOUS WORKSITES

Positions that are “community-based,” in whole or part, require the incumbent to travel between various worksites within his/her workday/workweek. The incumbent is required to have reliable transportation that can facilitate this requirement. The incumbent is further required to meet the criteria for insurability by the Center’s risk management facilitator; and produce proof of minimal auto liability coverage when applicable. Failure to meet these terms may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment, contract or other status with Metrocare.

Current State of Texas Driver License or if you live in another state, must be currently licensed in that state. If licensed in another state, must obtain Texas Driver License within three (3) months of employment.

Liability insurance is required if employee will operate personal vehicle on Center property or for Center business. Must be insurable by Center’s liability carrier if employee operates a Center vehicle or drives personal car on Center business. Must have an acceptable driving record.
