Our client is seeking a seasoned Freight Accountant with extensive US freight brokerage and transportation accounting experience to manage full-cycle accounting across multiple entities. You will oversee general ledger accuracy, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reporting, and month-end close while building scalable accounting processes and internal controls. Your work will directly impact financial visibility, cash flow management, operational efficiency, and the company's growth toward its $200 million business goal.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own full-cycle accounting for multiple entities, including general ledger management, journal entries, accruals, prepaids, intercompany transactions, and month-end and year-end close.
  • Manage accounts payable, including carrier settlements, quick-pay transactions, factoring payments, and vendor invoices, ensuring every payment is accurately matched to the corresponding load, rate confirmation, and proof of delivery (POD).
  • Manage accounts receivable, including customer invoicing, cash application, aging reports, collections, short payments, and chargebacks.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, factoring accounts, AR, AP, and intercompany balances while ensuring all balance sheet accounts are fully supported and accurate.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, at both the entity and consolidated levels.
  • Analyze load-level and customer-level profitability, develop cash flow forecasts, and monitor freight-related charges, including accessorials, detention, lumper fees, TONU, fuel surcharges, freight claims, and insurance recoveries.
  • Establish accounting controls, maintain audit-ready documentation, coordinate with external CPAs on tax filings and audits, and collaborate with engineering teams to automate accounting workflows and validate system changes.
Must-Have Qualifications
  • 8+ years of professional accounting experience, including full-cycle general ledger management and ownership of month-end close.
  • Required experience in US freight brokerage, logistics, transportation, or carrier accounting, with a strong understanding of carrier settlements, quick pay, factoring, accessorials, detention, fuel surcharges, and freight claims.
  • Proven experience preparing financial statements, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and managing multi-entity and intercompany accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, accrual accounting, and financial reporting practices.
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks or comparable accounting software, transportation management systems (TMS), and advanced Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, improve, and document accounting processes, including AP/AR workflows, month-end close procedures, reconciliations, and internal controls.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, with exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly and challenge discrepancies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active CPA license or progress toward CPA certification.
  • Experience with accounting automation, system integrations, and accounting data flows between TMS platforms and general ledger systems.
  • Experience developing load-level and customer-level margin reporting and cash flow forecasts for freight brokerage or asset-based trucking businesses.
  • Experience supporting external audits, tax compliance, 1099 reporting, and sales and use tax filings.
  • Experience implementing payment approval workflows, segregation of duties, and banking verification procedures to reduce financial risk.
