A vacancy exists in the Department of Aging for the Senior Affairs Associate I – Senior Center Assistant Director position.

Pay Schedule I, Grade 26, Regular Schedule:  35 hours per week.

Job Purpose
Under general supervision, directs the operation of a regional community senior center.

Essential Job Duties
  • Registers new members, renews current members' membership forms.
  • Collects enhancement donations, enters data into WellSky, and handles member issues (in conjunction with the Director, Regional Manager, or Senior Center Social Worker, as necessary). 
  • Guides the senior center Executive Board.
  • Oversees the Eating Together Congregate Nutrition Program.
  • Plans, implements, promotes, and coordinates programs and services for older adults.
  • Assures the safe operation, necessary maintenance, and security of senior center equipment and buildings.
  • Leads, recruits, supervises, and trains support staff and volunteers.
  • Recruits program instructors.
  • Maintains payroll for instructors and staff.
  • Prepares schedules of activities.
  • Assesses the needs of senior center members and the broader community.
  • Evaluates senior center programs and services in response to identified needs and available resources.
  • Tracks expenditures and activities for budgetary purposes.
  • Purchases materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence regarding senior center activities.
  • Publicizes senior center and other department-sponsored events through newsletters, e-newsletters, flyers, press releases, and other means.
  • Assists the senior center council in developing and conducting special events, activities, and community projects.
  • Keeps records of program activities and expenditures for budgetary purposes and prepares reports and correspondence regarding program activities
Examples of Other Duties
  • Leads or conducts senior center programs or activities.
  • Interviews or counsels senior center or community members regarding personal needs and available resources for seniors.
  • Responds to emergencies at Senior Centers.
  • Assists sick or injured senior adults until emergency medical personnel arrive at the scene.
  • In the absence of the custodian, may set up tables, lift boxes, and deliver supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in gerontology, recreation, education, health, business administration, public administration, marketing, public relations, nursing specialty, accounting, or a social or behavioral science.
 
(Experience providing services to older adults may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years for the required education.)

Preferred Experience
Experience in monitoring and evaluating programs for older adults
Experience in recruiting and managing volunteers to work with older adults
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)

  • Knowledge of planning, conducting human services programming, services, and activities for older adults.
  • Ability to provide and develop programming, services, and activities for older adults.
  • Ability to assess the needs of older adults and their communities.
  • Ability to work effectively with older adults.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the operations of a senior center.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and supervise center support staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to learn County and Departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to learn County computer software, including WellSky and Microsoft Office.

Licenses and Certificates

Some positions within this classification may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a Non-Commercial, Class C Maryland driver's license at the time of appointment.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.Persons appointed to this classification must satisfactorily complete County-sponsored CPR and First Aid training. These positions must maintain certification throughout employment.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails frequent walking, standing, and other limited physical activity, including travel between work sites.

Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a Non-Commercial, Class C Maryland driver's license at the time of appointment.

Some positions in this classification may be required to respond to medical emergency situations until emergency medical personnel arrive at the scene.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation
Applicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, a drug screen, and an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to, a criminal background check, education verification, and a fingerprint check.
