Are you interested in beginning or continuing a dynamic career as a 9-1-1 professional? The Broomfield Police Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as 9-1-1 Public Safety Telecommunicators. 

Your role in 9-1-1 will play a crucial part in ensuring the safety of the public and field responders. Broomfield's 9-1-1 Communications Center is responsible for managing emergency and non-emergency calls for service within the City and County of Broomfield, as well as dispatching appropriate police, fire, and medical resources.

Salary Range: $36.14 - $49.92/hour 

Starting pay is determined based on years of relevant experience, with applicants with little to no experience in primary PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) roles being eligible for the starting amount listed above.

Selection Process

Our selection process includes the following steps: application review, CritiCall 911 computer-based skills assessment, virtual one-sided interview, integrity interview, Computer Voice Stress Analysis, psychological suitability evaluation, sit-along with dispatch, background investigation, and post-offer physical and psychological evaluations. 

  • Receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls and digital requests for help from the public requesting police, fire, and other emergency services.

  • Remain calm and composed, even in stressful situations. This includes managing conflicts effectively and dealing with frequent interruptions and requests for assistance in a timely manner. 

  • Demonstrate clear and effective communications with active listening, call control, judgment, respect, and empathy with callers that range from calm to panicked. 

  • Gather, analyze, and document critical information during life-or-death situations such as crimes in progress, medical emergencies, and fire/rescue incidents.

  • Document incident details quickly and accurately to establish incident urgency, categorize the incident type, and obtain the proper help for the caller. 

  • Interpret caller location by using geographic knowledge, tools, and location tracking capabilities. 

  • Understand local and regional geography to quickly and accurately identify the location of an emergency and dispatch appropriate personnel.  

  • Prioritize multiple events based on available resources — critical thinking. 

  • Provide pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions to those who require assistance during high-stress situations.

  • Operate radio equipment to dispatch appropriate resources.

  • Monitor local and area-wide radio channels for informational and operational purposes.  

  • Operate multiple systems and conversations simultaneously without mistake. 

Training:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required

  • College level course in psychology, human relations, customer service, or related fields preferred

Experience: 

  • Two years of related experience in clerical, phone, or customer service work. 

  • Previous experience working different shifts is preferred.

Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however, education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass and/or participate in the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: typing test, software evaluation, oral board, peer sit-along, reference checks, polygraph or CVSA, background examination including local police check and sex-offender registry, psychological evaluation, audiometric test, medical examination, drug screen, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 

  • Cannot have been convicted of a felony or disqualifying misdemeanor per NCIC/CCIC policy.

  • Within 6 months of hire, must obtain NCIC/CCIC certification and Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD) certification. 

The working environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The majority of time is spent in a sitting position in the Communications Center; however the operator's console is capable of adjusting in height to allow the operator to stand and perform their duties.  Work may vary from periods of inactivity to periods of high emotional and mental stress. Work also involves working shifts which includes all hours of days and nights, including weekends and holidays. The noise level in the environment is moderate.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to walk, reach with hands and arms, and stand. Physical demands are described as sedentary (Exert up to 10 lbs of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body).  Data entry and other tasks require operating a computer for the incumbent's entire shift. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision (ability to distinguish between the colors red and green) and ability to adjust focus.
