Primarily requires strong work ethics and willingness to learn, along with foundational skills, while technical expertise will be developed through on-the-job training or apprenticeship programs.

Overview
Under direct and immediate supervision, the Trades Helper supports and assists with the installation, repair, operation, and maintenance of city properties and facilities, including but not limited to plumbing, carpentry, electrical, paint, welding, roofing, equipment operation, mechanical, and automotive properties of the City of Dallas, in compliance with federal, state, and city codes.
Essential Functions
1 Assists with troubleshooting; observes and supports all troubleshooting activities, including identifying, detailing, and recording issues for various trades workers, such as mechanical, technical, and general labor or other maintenance or construction-related problems across various sites (e.g., airport zones, city streets, parks, waste management centers, and facilities).
2 Supports the installation of new components and systems required for the full operation of the assigned trade.
3 Assists with the demolition and reconstruction of city properties, including electrical circuits, city-owned equipment, parks and rec centers, commercial buildings/HVAC, mechanics shops, waste areas, or other projects requiring renovation or maintenance.
4 Documents and records maintenance and repair activities to ensure accurate work logs; assists with administrative tasks. Works under the supervision of senior trades personnel or crew leaders, following established repair procedures and specifications.
5 Learns and assists with proper preventive maintenance practices to extend equipment life and ensure operational efficiency.
6 Acquires knowledge of blueprints, diagrams, manuals, and system guides to determine equipment location and verify compliance with city codes. Adheres to policies, procedures, and safety standards for various trades.
7 Performs additional tasks to support trade operations and crew objectives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1 Basic understanding of tools, equipment, and safety practices used in construction and maintenance trades.
2 Willingness to learn trade-specific skills and procedures.
3 Strong attention to detail and ability to work under supervision in a team environment.
4 Strong work ethic and ability to learn basic skills in a chosen trade.
5 Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
6 Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work in various outdoor and indoor environments for extended periods.
7 Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and around noise, dust, and other typical job site elements.
8 Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.
9 Ability to read various schematic diagrams and blueprints, troubleshoot systems, and implement resolutions.
10 Ability to use and follow instructions of various types of hand tools, power tools, precision testing, and/or troubleshooting equipment.
11 Skill in communicating both verbally and in writing; ability to clearly express questions, communicate unknowns, and acquire knowledge through practice and theory.
12 Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Enrollment in a Dallas County High School or Dallas College vocational certification program is preferred.
Experience
Six (6) months of experience with exposure to general building maintenance, plumbing, electrical, construction, or any trade-related work.
License and Certifications
- Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
- Ability to obtain any required safety certifications (e.g., OSHA) within a specified timeframe.
- Some positions require a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License within the probationary period.
Other Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age.
- An intensive background check is required for security-sensitive locations.
- Subject to varying shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and/or twenty-four/seven (24/7) emergency call out.
- Subject to inclement weather conditions.
