The Bouvé College of Health Sciences has over 300 faculty members, with approximately 2,500 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in the health, psychosocial and biomedical sciences and supports the University’s mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs. The college has four schools: School of Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences, School of Community Health and Behavioral Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

About the Opportunity

Northeastern is building research capacity around how people function in the most demanding and extreme environments, from orbit to the battlefield, to disaster response. Bouvé College of Health Sciences seeks applications for open rank tenure-track or tenure-on-entry positions beginning in academic year 2027-2028 or 2028-2029. We welcome candidates from any relevant discipline, and the tenure home will follow the candidates' training and experience in one of the departments in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and a secondary appointment in the College of Arts, Media and Design, College of Engineering, or College of Science.

This position will focus on the psychological, neurobehavioral, cognitive, social, or communication sciences that sustains the performance of individuals and teams under extreme physical and cognitive loads, including the human-machines, and human-AI teams increasingly operating together in those settings, particularly as it relates to performance, resilience, and technology necessary for people and teams operating in extreme environments. The successful candidate will establish or expand a program of externally-funded research in this area and will shape how Northeastern grows with it, with collaborators across health sciences, arts, media, and design, engineering, computer sciences, and the university’s research institutes. Our tenure and promotion process values collaborative research and teamwork. Hires will be mentored for success, with mentoring teams and group guidance. In addition, a strong and effective faculty development strategy is part of the Northeastern institutional mission. The ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development office works in conjunction with the Office of Research Development (ORD), the Office of Belonging, the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR), and University Decision Support (UDS) to provide programs and trainings to further develop and support a thriving faculty.

Responsibilities:

Research

• Develop or sustain an independent, externally funded program of research.
• Pursue extramural funding.
• Publish in peer-reviewed venues and disseminate work to scientific, clinic, or public audiences.
• Mentor doctoral, master’s, or undergraduate students in research, consistent with the tenure home programs.

Teaching

• Teach at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level in the candidate’s area of expertise.
• Contribute to university degree and certificate programs.
• Advise and mentor students, including global student populations.
• Contribute to curriculum development, course design, or program growth.

Service

• Contribute service to the department, college, and university
• Participate in the profession through peer review, editorial work, professional societies and organizations, or grant review.
• Engage with community, clinical, operational, or industry partners where relevant to the research program.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated track record of research in human performance, musculoskeletal / brain / physiological / cognitive, or related domains of health, in high-performance subjects or settings. For example, space, warfighter, austere or other extreme environments or contexts.
• PhD, ScD, EdD, MD, DO, PsyD or equivalent doctorate in relevant fields (e.g., exercise science, environmental or integrative physiology, biomedical engineering, psychology/cognitive science, human factors, public health, medicine, data science, or related field) by the employment start date.
• Demonstrated ability to work with all student populations and promotion of experiential learning.
• Record of, or potential for, extramural research funding.

An associate rank appointment requires a minimum of 5 years of academic experience; a full rank appointment requires a minimum of 10 years of academic experience.

Teaching statement (1 page): Please summarize your past instructional and mentorship experiences, your pedagogical philosophy, your plans/goals for teaching in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences (including existing and proposed courses), and your strategies for teaching and mentoring global student populations.

Pay Range:

Assistant Professor: $104,000.00 - $143,000.00 | Associate Professor: $129,000.00 - $157,000.00 | Professor: $170,000.00 - $246,000.00

With the pay range(s) shown above, the starting salary will depend on several factors, which may include your education, experience, location, knowledge and expertise, and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
