The role – what you’ll do
Barr is seeking a mechanical engineer to join our team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Engineering and Design business unit, working with multidisciplinary project teams to serve industrial clients in the mining, power generation, oil and gas, and manufacturing sectors. You will use your expertise to develop and review engineering calculations, system specifications, and construction drawings; select equipment and components; and guide project execution from concept to bid packages. You will contribute to technical reports, cost estimates, proposals, and client-facing documentation that support critical infrastructure investments.
A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. They must possess a flexible working style and be willing to occasionally modify their schedule to meet deadlines and/or client needs. They must be able to work cooperatively in a project team environment that requires self-initiative and demonstrate effective project organization and management skills.
Your impact – key responsibilities
Technical knowledge: work with multidisciplinary project teams providing mechanical engineering and related technical expertise. The work will primarily serve mining and heavy industrial clients. Project work may include industrial system design related to fluid transfer, bulk material handling, and plant layout; preparing design/construction drawings and specifications; completing engineering calculations and analyses; selecting equipment and components; writing technical reports; preparing sketches for system arrangement; developing details of designs; and preparing cost estimates and bid packages.
Project management: planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to team members and clients.
Field presence: construction observation and surveying as needed. Serve as lead mechanical engineer or project manager for large capital projects within industries.
About the opportunity
Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, or Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, offices.
Travel expectation: the work may involve short-term, out-of-town trips.
Work environment: some work locations will feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment. Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on these sites. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
About you – required core competencies
Education: bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university
Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience
Licenses/certifications: Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) certification or ability to obtain within one year
Software: Experience with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office software
Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Strong writing ability
Willingness to work cooperatively in a project team environment that encourages self-initiative
Demonstrated project organization and management skills
Flexible working style as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs
Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future.
Helpful additional experience (not required)
10+ years of working on projects directly related to job responsibilities described above at a consulting engineering or industrial workplace
Experience with Revit and/or Solidworks software
Experience directing the work of CAD designers
Experience with AFT Fathom and/or Caesar II software
Client service aptitude and experience
Experience working directly with clients
Proven experience involving industrial equipment, pumping/piping systems, gas handling systems, HVAC, dust collection, plumbing, slurry/paste handling, and/or other relevant mechanical systems
Demonstrated project or task management skills
Compensation: anticipated range of $95,000 – $125,000 CAD annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
