The Social Media & Community Manager oversees the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s organic social media platforms, using compelling multimedia storytelling and audience engagement to strengthen the organization’s reputation, deepen connections in the community, and demonstrate the Trust’s impact as a leader in Downtown Pittsburgh. The role manages social media content strategy in coordination with the Strategic Communications department including planning and publishing, creator and influencer relationship management, audience interaction, comment moderation, and other initiatives that support the Trust’s visibility and reputation.

The position also manages the Trust’s daily social presence through frequent photography and videography, fast-turn editing and posting, live event coverage, channel-specific copywriting, content calendar management, and responses to guest inquiries. Content may range from informal, in-the-moment coverage to professionally produced photography and video. The Social Media & Community Manager also uses business intelligence tools to analyze performance, report on key metrics, and inform future content strategy.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, multimedia, advertising, digital marketing, or related technical field preferred.

Work Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience in social media management, communications, multimedia or related fields. Past photography, videography, and editing experience is required.

Supervisory Experience: Prior experience managing others is not required.

Technical skills: Strong photography, videography, and editing skills are required. Channel-specific copywriting experience is preferred. Strong time and project management capability is essential with an ability to prioritize and reprioritize in a fast-paced team environment.

Intangibles: Candidates should be passionate about the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s mission, including positively impacting quality of life in Pittsburgh and the arts-driven revitalization of Downtown Pittsburgh. Candidates should be self-motivated, curious, tactful, determined, patient, and organized in order to succeed in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities. Candidates should possess strong written and oral communication skills, be adept at tailoring messages for target audiences, and have outstanding attention to detail.

Essential Functions:

Main job responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage and continuously improve the Trust’s social media and community engagement strategy to strengthen institutional visibility, reputation, audience participation and connection.
  • Manage the organization’s social media content calendar, balancing time-sensitive event promotion, institutional storytelling, community-focused content, sponsor commitments, and sales priorities.
  • Create, capture, and publish timely photo and video content from performances, festivals, media events, gallery exhibitions, sponsor activations, fundraising events, and everyday activity throughout the Cultural District.
  • Edit photography and video for social platforms, producing content ranging from informal, fast-turn coverage to polished institutional storytelling.
  • Write concise, compelling copy tailored to each platform, audience, and communications objective while maintaining a consistent Trust voice.
  • Monitor social channels and engage with audiences through comments, direct messages, and relevant community conversations.
  • Moderate comments and identify emerging issues, escalating reputational concerns, or sensitive guest interactions as appropriate.
  • Provide live and fast-turn social coverage of performances, festivals, community events, and other Trust activities, including occasional evening and weekend assignments.
  • Use business intelligence and platform analytics tools to track performance, identify audience trends and translate key performance indicators into recommendations for content and channel strategy.
  • Build and manage relationships with creators and influencers, including identifying potential partners, coordinating visits and content opportunities, and evaluating results.
  • Provide responsive, thoughtful guest service by addressing questions and feedback received through social media channels in coordination with the Trust’s guest services team.
  • Coordinate with colleagues, artists, resident companies, presenters, sponsors and other external partners on presales, event announcements, campaigns and shared content opportunities.
  • Prepare regular performance reports and share actionable insights with Communications, Marketing, and organizational leadership.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Supervisory responsibility: This position does not have any supervisory responsibility but may oversee interns or freelancers who work on specific department projects.

Budgetary responsibility: This position oversees budgets related to occasional contracted support of photography, videography or content creator projects.

Decision-making responsibility: This position exercises day-to-day discretion regarding management of the Trust’s outbound social media content, subject to the general oversight of the Director of Communications.

Strategic responsibility: This position oversees the Trust’s social media strategy, ensuring that guests receive relevant and timely communications at an appropriate frequency. Additionally, the position ensures that outbound communications meet Trust branding expectations. All strategy decisions are subject to the oversight of the Director of Communications.

Reporting requirements: This position’s reporting duties are primarily internal, aimed at fostering business growth. On occasion, external reporting to event partners may be required.

Travel requirements: Limited travel (less than 5%) is required for this position.

Physical demands: This position involves mainly office work – occasional lifting up to 20-30 lbs. may be required. The individual should be able to sit and/or view a computer screen for extended periods of time. When capturing photographic or video content of events or performances, walking or standing for extended periods of time may be required.

Salary: Starting at $48,000
