Senior Sustainability Manager – Carbon
The Senior Sustainability Manager - Carbon role is deeply involved in supporting bp’s carbon ‘Net Zero’ aims and ambitions across a whole range of internal and external activities, from strategy to carbon accounting, reporting, forecasting, benchmarks and climate science etc. Located inside the central strategy and sustainability team the role will support both executive level decision making but also engage across S&S, finance, HSE&C, investor relations, Press, Communications, & External Affairs teams as well as the wider businesses.
The senior Sustainability Strategy Manager - carbon will already possess deep SME level technical and commercial knowledge of climate science and carbon aspects of the energy transition pathways; with the ability to clearly communicate on these topics in both and external & internal setting throughout all leadership levels. Through this role you will get to understand and influence bp’s future strategy, group policy, as well as guide the development of external GHG standards.
In this role You will:
- Lead the carbon input into our Group and business strategies, helping to shape how these strategies are operationalized and performance handled across the company.
- Lead bp’s participation in external organisations such as IPIECA, GHG Protocol and WBCSD, acting as the company’s subject matter authority on greenhouse gas accounting and supporting the development of decision-useful standards.
- Develop bp-wide policy positions on GHG accounting and support the development of policy positions on energy transition and climate regulation, such as ETS, EU Methane and Green Hydrogen.
- Spend time scanning the external landscape to maintain knowledge of trends, evolving benchmarks, frameworks, disclosures and publications, such as IPCC, IEA, WBCSD and OGCI, and apply an integrated understanding of bp’s strategy and business activity to support engagement with key external partners, including investors, banks, NGOs and oil and gas peers.
- Play a lead role in the development of key company disclosures, such as the Sustainability Report and ARA, while also helping bp align with forthcoming ESRS and ISSB climate disclosure requirements.
- Directly support the VP of Sustainability in day-to-day activities and provide guidance on topics across the sustainability landscape, with the ability to contribute to LT discussions and mentor and support the development of the wider team.
- Undertake a wide variety of work due to the flexible nature of the team and the dynamic content of the ongoing internal and external agenda across carbon and climate science.
What You will need to be successful:
- Carbon management expertise – a high SME-level understanding of climate science, including pathway modelling such as IEA and IPCC, economics, carbon accounting and methodologies, and how these principles can be used to develop new accounting and reporting approaches.
- Strategic and commercial thinking – excellent strategic, technical and commercial analytical skills, with a willingness to get into the detail when necessary, up to and including modelling.
- Communication and analytical thinking – the ability to think strategically, distil complex, cross-disciplinary problems and analysis into simple insights, and communicate them clearly and powerfully in written and verbal formats.
- The agenda is dynamic, so you should be able to manage competing priorities, seek support where needed and provide focus to drive projects to completion.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence across multiple interfaces and interested parties, engage confidently at executive level and manage competing tensions across the business.
- A highly motivated great teammate who is able to lead when needed and support others in delivering against a busy agenda, including through knowledge sharing, mentor and constructive challenge.
