Summary:
As the Intern Mechanical Engineer – Qualification Test, you support North Atlantic Industries' engineering operations through qualification testing, mechanical design, software development, and technical documentation. This position provides hands-on engineering experience while contributing to the testing, evaluation, and reliability of high-performance electronic products.
Requirements
- Assist in planning, setting up, and conducting electromagnetic interference (EMI) and environmental qualification testing in accordance with applicable military and commercial standards.
- Support prototype testing, troubleshooting, and engineering evaluations to assess product performance and identify potential issues.
- Develop and modify software tools and automated test applications to support engineering and qualification testing activities.
- Prepare and maintain test procedures, technical reports, and supporting documentation to communicate test methods, results, and findings.
- Design and assist in fabricating mechanical test fixtures, mounting plates, brackets, panels, and related test hardware using CAD software and machine shop equipment as needed.
- Collaborate with engineering personnel to operate test equipment, collect and analyze data, and support continuous improvement of testing processes.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Currently pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering or engineering technology discipline.
- Demonstrate a foundational understanding of engineering principles through coursework, laboratory experience, or academic projects.
- Possess basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to learn engineering software and test equipment.
- Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and organizational skills with a willingness to learn in a hands-on engineering environment.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
- Experience using CAD and 3D modeling software to design mechanical fixtures, brackets, panels, mounting hardware, or similar components through coursework, laboratory work, or engineering projects.
- Familiarity with machining, drilling, cutting, fastening methods, engineering drawings, dimensioning, and the safe use of general-purpose hand and machine shop tools.
- Exposure to EMI or environmental testing, prototype evaluation, general-purpose test equipment, or military and commercial standards such as MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-810, or RTCA/DO-160G.
- Familiarity with programming, test automation, software development, or technical documentation through coursework, laboratory experience, or engineering projects.
Work Schedule and Environment
- This Fall 2026 internship requires 15–20 hours per week on site during our business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opportunities to continue into additional semesters may be available.
