Research Assistant

Job Description:

Summary

The Research Assistant will assist with ongoing experiments in the Hart laboratory in the Department of Neuroscience at Brown University. The laboratory uses genetic and molecular approaches to understand neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, using the nematode C. elegans. In collaboration with senior staff, the Research Assistant will assist with developing and running drug-screening assays with C. elegans disease models. The research assistant will also provide general laboratory support and maintenance to further the research goals of the Hart Laboratory. 

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 10/31/2027, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Required: Bachelor’s degree in life sciences (molecular biology, neuroscience, genetics, or related sciences) and prior related research experience or extensive coursework in an organized biology research laboratory (grade7).

• Required: 1 to 2 years of experience within a research laboratory and/or equivalent combination of education and experience (grade 8).

• Experience working with C. elegans, Drosophila, or working with laboratory organisms using genetic approaches is highly advantageous.

• Experience in basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, electrophoresis, solution making) is highly desired.

• And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Dependability, strong organizational skills, and the ability to maintain records with very high accuracy.

• Ability to quickly learn new skills.

• Ability to accurately and carefully undertake scientific experiments, with consultation on design.

• Ability to actively discuss on-going work with group members, during weekly lab meetings.

• Understanding of basic statistical, genetic, molecular biology concepts (and experience with PCR, making solutions, and other common techniques).

• Computing, data analysis and presentation skills (i.e., Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.) and ability to handle basic statistical analysis and spreadsheets.
