SENIOR PHARMACY TECHNICIAN, PHARMACY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Supports the Pharmacists in various tasks within the Pharmacy Services, including drug preparation, compounding, repacking, dispensing, and reconstitution of cytotoxic drugs (where permitted). The role ensures safe and effective dispensing of medications in compliance with legal, professional, and hospital standards. The Senior Pharmacy Technician also provides guidance to pharmacy staff and students, assists in supervision, and ensures timely and accurate pharmaceutical care delivery to patients, wards, and clinics.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Main Responsibilities 

• Screen, prepare, check, and process all incoming prescriptions (inpatient, outpatient, and discharge) for accuracy before dispensing.
• Execute and operate dispensing procedures in accordance with the “5 Rights” of medication safety.
• Check and collate prepared medications against prescriptions to ensure accuracy, completeness, and patient safety.
• Provide and distribute medications to patients, wards, and clinics, maintaining accurate records and timely delivery.
• Install and implement effective dispensing workflows to enhance operational efficiency.
• Provide patient education and counselling on medication use, referring complex cases to the supervising Pharmacist.
• Liaise with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff to clarify prescriptions, resolve dosage/frequency discrepancies, or manage drug unavailability.
• Produce and compound extemporaneous preparations (lotions, mixtures, dilutions) for stock or patient-specific needs under pharmacist supervision.
• Repack, label, and check bulk medications to ensure accuracy, traceability, and proper stock rotation.
• Gather, collate, and analyze stock and inventory data to maintain optimal levels, prevent shortages or overstocking, and support operational planning.
• Execute and check monthly ward stock inspections, identify slow-moving or short-expiry items, and rotate stock as required.
• Operate, implement, and process inventory systems to track stock movement, receipts, and usage in real time.
• Submit and report drug availability, shortages, emergency sourcing requirements, and stock discrepancies to the Pharmacist or Chief Pharmacist.
• Maintain and implement FEFO (First-Expiry-First-Out) practices to ensure drug quality and minimize wastage.
• Check, maintain, and implement sufficient levels of general pharmacy supplies (labels, disposables, prescription pads) to ensure smooth operations.
• Operate, check and maintain electronic pharmacy systems for data entry, prescription tracking, and billing processes, bill reconciliation and finalization processes.
• Collaborate and liaise with pharmacists, nursing, and medical teams to ensure seamless operational workflow.
• Act as a mentor or preceptor for Diploma in Pharmacy students and participate in preceptor training as assigned.
• Check, record, and submit medication errors, near misses, and adverse events to the supervising Pharmacist or Chief Pharmacist.

Other Duties and Responsibilities 

• Perform any other responsibilities assigned by immediate superior or hospital management.

JOB REQUIREMENT

Education:

• Diploma in Pharmacy

Knowledge and Experiences:

• Minimal 5 years of experience in hospital setting
• Able to communicate fluently and write in English language and Bahasa Malaysia

Special skills required

• Skilled in data collation, analysis, and reporting
• Ability to check and detect errors during dispensing of medications.
• Has good communication, counseling and interpersonal skills
