Description
We're looking for an organized, people-friendly Administrative Specialist to be part of the go-to hub of our Public Works Department, with regular support to our Finance team and Assistant City Manager. No two days look the same here — one moment you're greeting a citizen at the front counter, the next you're pulling together a fuel report, and the next you're helping track down building plans for the water treatment plant. If variety keeps you engaged and a full plate feels like a good day at work, this is your role.
Ready to put your organizational skills and people skills to work for your community?
Apply today to join the City of Brevard team as our next Administrative Specialist.
Why You'll Love This Role- Constant variety — phones, front-counter service, reports, records, ordering supplies and more, so you're never bored.
- A role where your attention to detail actually matters — accurate fuel reports, fleet close-outs, and safety records keep the whole department running.
- Real relationships — you'll be a familiar, trusted face for citizens and coworkers alike.
- A close-knit, mission-driven team that takes pride in keeping Brevard's services running smoothly.
- The stability and benefits of local government employment, with meaningful, visible community impact.
What You'll Do
You'll spend most of your time (about 75–80%) as part of the team providing administrative support for Public Works — answering phones, greeting visitors, ordering supplies, tracking fleet and fuel reports, and keeping the department's records, work orders, supplies, and safety data sheets organized.
You'll also lend your sharp eye for detail to the Finance Department (about 10–12%), helping with payments, customer service, journal entries, and accounts payable follow-up.
And you'll support the Assistant City Manager (about 10–12%) by providing a variety of administrative support tasks to include organizing and maintaining drawing filing systems for Public Works and our Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants — a great project for someone who enjoys building order out of a lot of moving pieces.
ScheduleThis position worksMonday through Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, with an hour for lunch. Occassional overtime or schedule adjustments may be needed based on workload, assignment, and/or deadlines. Graduation from high school, supplemented by coursework in word and data processing, data entry, or related fields, and experience operating computers and working with the general public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Outlook) is required. A vaid NC Drivers License is required.
What We're Looking For
- A genuine people-person with excellent customer service instincts
- Someone who stays organized and on task even when the office gets busy
- A sharp eye for accuracy and detail — the kind of person who catches the small stuff
- Comfort with Microsoft Word, Excel, and everyday office technology
- Clear, professional communication, both spoken and written
- Someone with some prior cash handling experience
- Working knowledge of office practices and procedures.
- Working knowledge of computer software used to create reports, forms, documents, and spreadsheets, and other technology applications used in the assigned office.
- Skill in operating a computer, scanner, copier, fax machine, and other standard office equipment.
- Skill in customer contact and public interaction.
- Ability to process data and information as required by assigned programs and office functions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to exercise tact and courtesy, including in sensitive situations.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
- Ability to enter data accurately at the speed required for the position.
- Ability to use automated systems and technology to perform assigned duties.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and staff across departments.
- Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple departments in a fast-paced environment.
