We are seeking a versatile Data Scientist Intern to join our digital technology team for the summer. The intern will contribute to real-world projects that enhance efficiency, drive digital innovation, and support Envita's sustainability mission. The intern will gain valuable experience by exploring complex, real-world production data to analyzing trends, building and maintaining models, assessing data quality, identify gaps, and more. The ideal candidate will take initiative in these ventures, ask good questions, practice critical thinking, and be able to work with colleagues on other teams.
Essential Functions
- Ensures Health & Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and always acting in a safe manner.
- Data Analysis & Preparation: Collect, clean, transform, and analyze structured and unstructured datasets to support AI and automation initiatives.
- Product exploratory data analysis, deliver trends and insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- ML Applications: Fine-tune and evaluate machine learning models for tasks such as classification, regression, forecasting, and anomaly detection.
- Prototyping Solutions: Deliver proof-of-concept models and automation workflows that demonstrate measurable value.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Partner with technology and business transformation teams to contribute to and understand end-to-end data lifecycle.
- Continuous Research: Stay current on AI/ ML trends; recommend tools and methods that could benefit Envita’s operations.
- Gain practical experience in AI — from data analysis to workflow deployment.
- Apply Data Science in real-world business contexts, including sustainability and operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with product, strategy, and technology leaders on high-impact digital initiatives.
- Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to continuously growing in alignment with the Company’s core values, competencies, and skills.
Education Qualifications
- Required High School or Equivalent.
- Preferred Bachelor's Degree and open to college sophomore, junior, senior, recent grad, or 1st or 2nd master’s student majoring in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, Statistics/Mathematics, or a related field in progress.
Experience Qualifications
- Coursework, projects, and/or internships specializing in Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning or AI preferred.
- Familiarization with data manipulation and visualization tools, including but not limited to numpy, pandas, seaborn, and plotly.
- Academic, internship, or project-based experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g. scikit-learn, scipy, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Experience using generative AI models and prompt engineering techniques is a plus.
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of SQL and comfort working with messy, real-world data.
- Proficiency in Python, R, or equivalent for both ML and Data Analysis scripting.
- Strong understanding of AI/ML concepts and practical application in business contexts.
- Strong problem-solving skills to bridge technical models with business needs.
- Effective communicator, able to explain technical solutions to non-technical audiences.
- Code versioning, using Git/Github, SVN, or equivalent, is a plus.
- Code containerization (Docker) is a plus.

Internships at The Heritage Group
The Heritage Group Internship Program provides hands-on, paid experiences in a corporate function or within one of our many operating companies. Interns can expect to network with other students and professionals, gain useful skills, receive mentoring, and make their own contributions to the organization. Additionally, interns can participate in our weekly hosted events focused on professional development, team building, and community service.
Intern pay is non-negotiable and is calculated based on current academic class standing $18/hour (Freshman) - $21/hour (Senior), etc.
