GENERAL FUNCTION: 

The Senior Portfolio Manager (PM) is a key member of the Innovation Banking team responsible for managing a portfolio of technology and innovation-focused clients. The PM partners closely with Relationship Managers to structure, underwrite, and manage complex credit relationships for venture-backed, sponsor-backed, and high-growth companies across the technology, software, fintech, and digital infrastructure sectors.

This role requires deep expertise in commercial credit, venture debt, recurring revenue lending, and growth-company financial analysis. The Senior PM serves as a trusted advisor throughout the credit lifecycle, balancing prudent risk management with the ability to support innovative companies through various stages of growth.  The portfolio will include early-stage, pre-profit, and high-growth borrowers with limited operating histories.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Maintain an independent, current and forward-looking view of the creditworthiness of each client and communicate risk perspectives clearly to business and risk partners 

  • Perform ongoing monitoring and periodic deal reviews; approve or recommend renewal, modification or exit decisions as appropriate 

  • Analyze historical financials and projections to ensure accurate risk ratings, early identification of emerging credit issues, and clear articulation of industry and company trends 

  • Manage the underwriting, approval and documentation process for transactions, including new money, renewals, extensions, amendments, waivers, and ancillary products (e.g., treasury management, FX, interest rate derivatives and commodity exposure) 

  • Review and recommend credit decisions, perform final risk rating analysis, provide interpretation of credit policy to business partners, and escalate non-standard or higher-risk requests as appropriate. 

  • Ensure compliance with internal credit policies, regulatory guidelines and documentation standards 

  • Manage a larger, more complex portfolio that may include higherrisk, lead bank and high touch client relationships 

  • Serve as an active member of the coverage team in collaboration with Relationship Managers and Credit Risk 

  • Meet directly with prospects and clients as needed, leading diligence discussions for assigned relationships and supporting escalated discussions alongside senior leadership 

  • Provide guidance on deal structures, pricing and risk mitigation strategies 

  • Create and deliver portfolio performance reports and presentations for senior management, including risk insights and recommendations 

  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of system records and electronic credit files, supporting data governance and regulatory readiness 

  • Participate in senior level team meetings, providing input on portfolio themes, risk trends and process improvements 

  • Lead or participate in special projects and strategic initiatives that enhance portfolio management practices and systems 

  • Review work product prepared by junior team members to ensure accuracy and consistency and provide coaching and feedback to Credit Analysts  

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

May include the direct supervision and direction of the day-to-day activities of junior portfolio management team members. Responsible for providing employees with timely, candid, and constructive performance feedback. Develop employees to their fullest potential and provide challenging opportunities that enhance employee career growth. Develop the appropriate talent pool to ensure adequate bench strength and succession planning. Recognize and reward employees for accomplishments.  

 

Key Responsibilities

Credit Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Underwrite and manage complex credit relationships for innovation economy clients, including technology-enabled businesses, software companies, fintechs, and venture-backed enterprises.
  • Structure venture debt, recurring revenue facilities, working capital lines, acquisition financing, and other customized lending solutions.
  • Prepare comprehensive credit approval packages, financial models, risk assessments, and portfolio reviews.
  • Monitor borrower performance, covenant compliance, liquidity, cash runway, and key operating metrics. Maintain an independent, current, and forward-looking assessment of client creditworthiness, proactively identifying emerging risks and communicating perspectives to business and risk partners.
  • Underwrite prospects and monitor customers based on sponsor exposure, stage of development, subsector, vintage, revenue quality, burn/runway, covenants, funding-round timing, valuation resets, insider-round activity, bridge financing, and dependency on capital markets or strategic exits.
  • Assess business models, recurring revenue streams, unit economics, customer concentration, and growth metrics. Analyze key performance indicators relevant to venture-backed and growth-stage companies, including ARR/MRR growth, revenue retention, customer acquisition economics, sales efficiency and milestone achievement.
  • Create and deliver portfolio performance reports and presentations for senior management, including risk insights and recommendations. 
  • Review work product prepared by junior team members to ensure accuracy and consistency and provide coaching and feedback to Credit Analysts.
  • Participate in senior level team meetings, providing input on portfolio themes, risk trends and process improvements.

Transaction Execution

  • Partner with Relationship Managers in all aspects of transaction execution, including due diligence, deal structuring, financial analysis, and credit approval.
  • Lead diligence with founders, management teams, sponsors, and external advisors to understand product differentiation, market opportunity, competitive positioning, technology and intellectual-property risks, regulatory pathways, development milestones, commercialization plans, and future capital requirements.
  • Evaluate venture capital, private equity, and sponsor relationships supporting client growth strategies, including sponsor quality, investment thesis, governance, reserve capacity, follow-on financing history, and ability to support borrowers through varying market conditions and downside scenarios.
  • Analyze capitalization tables, funding histories, investor syndicates, and exit scenarios.
  • Manage the underwriting, approval and documentation process for transactions, including new money, renewals, extensions, amendments, waivers, and ancillary products (e.g., treasury management, FX, interest rate derivatives and commodity exposure).

Client & Industry Expertise

  • Expertise in technology and innovation industry verticals, including SaaS, fintech, healthcare technology, digital infrastructure, AI, and cybersecurity.
  • Participate in client meetings and provide strategic insight regarding capital structure and financing solutions.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, venture capital markets, private equity activity, and emerging innovation sectors.

Risk Management

  • Ensure adherence to the Bank’s credit policies, regulatory requirements, and portfolio management standards.
  • Conduct ongoing portfolio surveillance and periodic credit reviews.
  • Recommend risk rating changes and portfolio actions as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Credit, Risk, Legal, and Operations partners to ensure sound portfolio administration.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or related field.
  • 8+ years of commercial banking, corporate banking, leveraged finance, innovation banking, or specialty lending experience.
  • Strong credit underwriting and financial analysis skills.
  • Experience managing complex commercial loan portfolios.
  • Proven ability to independently analyze and structure credit transactions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Direct experience serving venture-backed, private equity-backed, or technology-focused companies.
  • Experience leading underwriting and diligence on venture debt, recurring revenue loans, growth capital facilities, or sponsor-backed M&A transactions.
  • Advanced financial modeling skills.
  • CFA, CPA, MBA, or other relevant professional designation.
  • Experience providing guidance, coaching, or review of junior staff work is preferred but not required.

The base salary for this position is reflective of the range of salary levels for all roles within this pay grade across the U.S. Individual salaries within this range will vary based on factors such as role, relevant skillset, relevant experience, education and geographic location.
