Senior / Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Dams & Levees

Overview

Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing Dams & Levees practice in our Louisville, KY; Johnson City, TN; Nashville, TN; Knoxville, TN; Chattanooga, TN; Asheville, NC; or Huntington, WV. This position may offer the flexibility to work a hybrid or remote schedule at the discretion of the company. 

 

This role will allow you to serve in a key leadership role to build out our geotechnical engineering capabilities, leveraging existing staff resources and collaborating with other senior dam practitioners across the firm. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the growth of our national dams and levees engineering practice that works on complex projects involving dams, levees, hydraulic structures and other flood risk management infrastructure. Our ideal candidate will possess a background in geotechnical engineering with a focus on dam engineering, and the ability to assist in building and leading a practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Collaboration and mentoring are cornerstones of Geosyntec’s culture. We operate under a sell-manage-do culture, and so we expect that you’d work on challenging technical projects while leveraging your existing knowledge and experience to help Geosyntec expand its current practices and capabilities through business development and client management.

 

Some of the key responsibilities for this position include:

• Designing, managing, and performing geotechnical, geoenvironmental, civil, mining, and/or geological engineering field investigations including drilling, instrumentation, and construction quality assurance;
• Leading dam safety reviews for dams;
• Working with numerical modeling software programs for stability, seepage and settlement/deformation analysis;
• Preparing and coordinating the integration of design calculations, drawings, technical specifications, construction cost estimates, reports, and permit applications;
• Managing projects successfully to achieve goals for technical excellence, budget control, schedule compliance, quality, client satisfaction, and profitability;
• Reviewing and managing written document production;
• Business development – including supporting/leading/bringing in new clients and obtaining repeat business from existing clients, leading proposal preparation, and developing and implementing a business development plan;
• Staff management and mentoring; and
• Participation in professional development opportunities including technical conferences, in-house seminars, and webinars that allow our professionals to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful consultants.

Education and Licensure

• Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil Engineering or related field. (required)
• Advanced degrees of the same. (preferred)
• Professional registration (i.e., P.E.). (required)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

• At least 8 years (10+ preferred) of direct engineering consulting experience performing geotechnical consulting work related to tailings facilities or dam engineering, and other related infrastructure; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
• Experience leading multi-disciplinary project teams. (required)
• Experience with project management and business development (required)
• Excellent leadership and detail orientation skills. (required)
• Knowledge of and experience with the geotechnical design and dams practice in the Region. (required)
• Knowledge of Risk-Informed-Decision-Making methodologies such as USACE, FERC, and Reclamation. (preferred)
• Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork and travel for site visits, inspections, and other business-related meetings or conferences. (required)
• Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing may be required.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
