About the Role

As the Medical Director, Regional Training Hub NT, you will provide strategic leadership to support and strengthen medical education and training pathways across the Northern Territory. Working closely with health services, specialist colleges, government agencies and community stakeholders, you will drive initiatives that expand rural and remote training capacity, support the development of the medical workforce, and enhance opportunities for students, pre-vocational doctors and specialist trainees. This influential role combines educational leadership, stakeholder engagement and clinical expertise to help build a sustainable healthcare workforce for the Territory.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing academic and strategic leadership for the Northern Territory Regional Training Hub, with a focus on developing and supporting medical training pathways across rural and remote settings.
• Building and maintaining strong partnerships with health services, specialist medical colleges, government agencies and other stakeholders to increase training capacity and workforce sustainability.
• Leading, mentoring and supporting medical students, pre-vocational doctors and specialist trainees through teaching, supervision, career development and educational innovation.
• Contributing to curriculum leadership, accreditation activities and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure high-quality medical education outcomes and training experiences.

About You

You are an experienced medical practitioner and educator who is passionate about developing the future healthcare workforce in rural and remote communities. With a strong understanding of the Northern Territory health system, you bring a collaborative leadership style, contemporary clinical expertise and a proven ability to build meaningful partnerships that support high-quality medical education and training. You thrive in complex environments, enjoy mentoring emerging clinicians and are committed to improving health outcomes through education and workforce development.

To be successful in this position, you will have:

• Current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), supported by extensive contemporary clinical experience in primary or secondary healthcare settings within the Northern Territory.
• Demonstrated excellence in tertiary, clinical and/or simulation-based teaching, with experience supporting learners across multiple stages of their medical training journey.
• Outstanding communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, healthcare professionals, universities, specialist colleges and other key stakeholders.
• Experience providing educational leadership, mentoring and strategic input into medical education programs, with knowledge of rural and remote training pathways and accreditation processes highly regarded.

Flinders Rural and Remote Health NT

At Flinders Rural and Remote Health NT, our aim is to be a hub for innovative health research, education, and workforce development across the Northern Territory.  We engage with students, community, and stakeholders to provide critical programs, such as the Northern Territory Medical Program, Paramedicine, Rural Clinical School, and the University Department of Rural Health.

Our postgraduate education pathways (Remote Health Practice program), provides workforce development through Indigenous health and clinical skills training, and we have a community driven research program led by researchers committed to improving health outcomes. We work alongside Poche SA+NT focussing on Indigenous leadership capacity development and developing the Indigenous health workforce.  All activities are driven by our values which focus on the long-term and short-term needs of the NT community.

Prescribed Conditions for Employment

Appointment to this role is conditional on the completion of required pre-employment checks and declarations, each of which must be satisfactory to the University. 

These include:

• Flinders University will require a current completed Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and Gender Based Violence Declaration which is satisfactory to the University. The contract of Employment is conditional upon the receipt of these completed compliance checks. A disclosable outcome will not automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration. Each case will be assessed on its individual merits and relevance to the inherent requirements of the role.
• Staff working in a health care setting are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in line with the NT Health policy.
• Northern Territory Government legislation (the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007) now requires all individuals in child related employment or whose duties involve, or are likely to involve, contact with a child, to hold a valid 'Working with Children Clearance' (Ochre Card). This position involves child related work and is assessed as requiring a Working with Children Clearance/Ochre Card.
