The primary function of this position is to assist in the circulation of library materials. Serves the community and library patrons by helping them access information and answering directional and informational questions. Operates library equipment as needed and ensures that equipment is maintained in proper working order. Evaluates materials (book donations) and services and may assist in the selection of materials for library purchase. Assists in promoting library use, especially programs and services. Compiles and produces computerized monthly statistical usage reports. Possible supervision in the absence of the Branch Manager, Librarian, or Library Associate.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Work directly with the public in the provision of public service.
- Assists with, and may lead all functions of, the Branch Circulation Desk, including issuing library cards and checking in and out of library materials under the guidance of the Branch Manager, Librarian, or Library Associate.
- Answers directional, informational, and reference questions of library patrons. Utilizes databases as needed to answer questions. Assists patrons in operating equipment as needed and in accessing available materials.
- Performs basic computer maintenance; maintains periodical materials and reference materials.
- Checks in and out library materials.
- Shelves new and returned library items.
- Compiles and produces monthly statistical usage reports, as requested.
- Initiates and handles special projects.
- Assists patrons with computers and locating requested materials.
- Aids in the training of new personnel and volunteers; provides ongoing direction on procedures.
- Processes interlibrary loan requests as needed.
- Assists with outreach and programming.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
- In the event of special, emergency, or disaster situations, employee may be required to work schedules other than those for which they are regularly scheduled in any capacity deemed appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree preferred. 4 years minimum of prior related work experience required; experience in Public Library preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to follow guidelines for work but determine the approach for doing the work; supervisor focuses on the outcomes of work.
- Ability to work with less than ten co-workers who are mostly engaged in same activities.
- Ability to perform entry-level professional work including basic data analysis and synthesis, report creation, process performance, and regulatory or compliance activities; knowledge of work involves statistics, operations analysis, or forecasting.
- Ability to make decisions that govern my activities as well as others. Decisions impact how unit provides services and support to internal and external customers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
- Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
- Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
- Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
