The Lead Medical Technologist (LMT) oversees and maintains testing performed in the assigned department of the Laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Evening Shift). This includes but is not limited to the review of quality control with corrective action, procedure development/review, instrumentation assessment/maintenance, and research of test methodologies. This role also assists with communication of test results and questions from patients, physicians, and employees.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform standardized and semi-routine biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immunohematological, microbiological, and serological tests in a research or clinical laboratory.

  • May perform tests in one scientific discipline or perform selected tests in multiple disciplines.

  • Provide guidance to technologists and assist in administrative activities, staff and student education, research and/or safety and infection control programs.

  • Properly use laboratory equipment such as computers, centrifuges, balances, microscopes, auto-analyzers, cell counters.

  • Calibrate, perform preventive maintenance, and troubleshoot equipment and instrument malfunctions. Communicate with service representatives when necessary to correct malfunctions. Prepare reagents as needed.

  • Monitor inventories; advises when supplies need to be reordered. May set up new equipment.

  • Attend educational in-services as appropriate. Participate in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.

  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation of patient information, equipment, and test results to comply with regulations. Document corrective actions taken for out of range test values.

  • Comply with hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies and procedures to prevent exposure to infectious materials. May serve on laboratory's safety committee; write and maintain safety and infection control policies and procedures and Material Safety Data Sheets. May monitor staff during safety compliance audits or drills.

  • Educate staff and students by demonstrating procedures and assisting in orientation and continuing education activities. May teach medical technology theory and techniques; develop teaching plans and student assessment tools; prepare written examinations.

  • Ensure collection of adequate and acceptable specimens. Analyze patient specimens using standard and moderately complex laboratory tests. Perform selected procedures on specimens. Perform required calculations. Reports results by phone and/or computer.

  • Perform other duties, as determined.

  • Formulate and pursue professional development plan.

  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.  

  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION:

  • Associate's degree in chemistry, biology, or other health or life science.

REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION:

  • Must meet the Georgia State Laws of Licensure of Clinical Laboratories, Chapter 290-5-29-.06 (4)(b) 1-5, (MT Registry) 8. Can qualify under 290-5-29-.06 (4)(b) 7 (1year)

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

  • N/A

REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS:

  • Interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate verbally and in writing, steady hands, and experience analyzing the results of medical tests.

  • Completes orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.

  • Completes mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements by determined due date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other health or life science.

  • ASCP or AMT or equivalent certification preferred.

  • ​Two years as a Medical Technologist with leadership skills

  • 2 years of Point of Care in hospital setting

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Uses body, tools, or special devices to safely, effectively, and efficiently to move, guide, or place patients. Involves some latitude for judgement with regard to precision attained and the selection of what adaptive device(s) to utilize.

  • Ability to transfer and position patients, consistent with lifting up to 15 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

  • Some potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.
