Description
Description -
This role is responsible for designing, developing and validating mechanical solutions for additive manufacturing systems. As part of the Mechanical Engineering R&D organization within the Additive Manufacturing business, the engineer contributes to the development of complex mechanical systems, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, reliable and manufacturable solutions across Polymer and Metal technologies.
The role requires strong engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to independently drive subsystem development while collaborating across functions to balance performance, quality, cost and schedule.
The engineer is also expected to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, actively share technical knowledge, and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers when appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Own mechanical subsystem development from concept generation through design, prototyping, validation and product release.
- Perform engineering analyses, tolerance stack-ups and design trade-off studies to support technical decisions.
- Define, execute and analyze experimental plans to validate designs and investigate technical issues.
- Drive root cause analysis and implement robust engineering solutions based on test data and analytical reasoning.
- Collaborate with WS, EE, FW, Thermals, Materials, HWQA, OPS, PPSC, CA throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Lead technical discussions and design reviews within the project team.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering methodologies, design practices and development processes.
- Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to junior engineers and peers.
Education & Experience Recommended
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- Typically 5–8 years of experience in mechanical product development, preferably within complex electromechanical systems or industrial equipment.
- Experience taking products or subsystems from concept through validation and release into production.
Knowledge & Skills
- Mechanical Design
- Product Development
- Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/DFA)
- Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- CAD (PTC Creo preferred)
- HP AM & LF PLC
- Technical Decision Making
- Root Cause Analysis
- Experimental Design & Validation
- Manufacturing Processes
- Engineering Data Analysis
- Experience leveraging AI-assisted tools to improve engineering productivity, technical documentation, data analysis or software development workflows.
Cross-Functional Competencies
- Technical ownership
- Collaboration across disciplines
- Clear technical communication
- Structured problem solving
- Learning agility
- Continuous improvement
- Mentoring and knowledge sharing
Impact & Scope
Owns the development of mechanical solutions for moderately complex products or subsystems. Influences technical decisions within the project team, contributes to engineering best practices, and may lead technical activities for defined workstreams while collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines.
Complexity
Works independently on complex engineering assignments requiring sound technical judgment and effective prioritization. Identifies technical risks, evaluates multiple solution alternatives, and balances competing constraints with limited guidance.
