At ERM, we’re looking for a Managing Consultant, Environmental Regulatory FERC Specialist to join our team of global environmental leaders. This mid-to-senior level role offers the flexibility to work anywhere in the United States and positions you at the intersection of environmental consulting and energy infrastructure, where your expertise will drive strategic permitting initiatives, influence major capital development projects, and make a lasting impact on sustainable energy solutions.
Why This Role Matters
Energy infrastructure projects are transforming the way we power our world—and regulatory expertise is at the heart of that transformation. As a Managing Consultant, you’ll play a critical role in guiding clients through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) process, ensuring compliance, and delivering innovative solutions that balance development with environmental stewardship.
What Your Impact Is
- Lead the development of FERC resource reports and permitting strategies for natural gas pipelines and LNG facilities.
- Serve as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert on complex, multi-million-dollar projects.
- Influence regulatory outcomes by engaging with key agencies and stakeholders across federal and state levels.
- Drive ERM’s mission to help clients achieve sustainability goals while meeting regulatory requirements.
What You’ll Bring
Required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in environmental studies, environmental management, wetland science, planning, geography, or related natural resources field. Or equivalent experience.
- 4-6 years (5–10 years preferred) of experience in permitting FERC-regulated capital development projects.
- Proven ability to research and prepare accurate technical documents and present findings to clients and regulatory agencies.
- Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and analytical skills.
- Experience with federal, state, and local permitting for development projects.
- Ability to multi-task, travel frequently, and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
- This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
Preferred
- Background in natural sciences with expertise in FERC application filings for natural gas projects.
- Experience developing permitting strategies and documents for FERC.
- Familiarity with NEPA environmental siting and impact assessments for energy infrastructure projects.
- GIS proficiency and ability to interpret maps (National Wetland Inventory, USGS, aerial photography).
- Collaborative mindset with excellent interpersonal skills and adaptability in fast-paced environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as lead author on FERC resource reports and impact assessment deliverables.
- Research, analyze, and compile data for permit applications and regulatory reports.
- Act as a subject matter expert on large-scale projects, managing scope, planning, and health & safety aspects.
- Support technical proposals and contribute to business development initiatives.
- Engage with regulatory agencies such as FERC, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, EPA, and others.
- Ensure quality control and compliance across all FERC-related applications and documentation.
Accepting applications on an ongoing basis.
