POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager, Health and Safety is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for the Alterra Experiences Division’s occupational health and safety program, ensuring the organization maintains a safe, healthy, and compliant workplace across all operations. The role leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Alterra Experiences Division’s health and safety management systems, programs, and practices, while partnering with operational leaders to identify and mitigate risk, strengthen safety performance, and foster a proactive safety culture. As the organization's subject matter expert, the Manager provides guidance on regulatory compliance, incident prevention, workers' compensation, training, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement initiatives, while leading and developing the Health & Safety team to deliver consistent, effective, and business-focused safety support throughout Alterra Experiences Division.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Lead, develop, and manage the Health & Safety team to ensure the effective delivery of occupational health and safety programs and services.
  • Establish team priorities, performance expectations, and work plans aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources, and staffing while supporting employee development, engagement, and succession planning.
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve Alterra Experience Division’s Health and Safety Management System.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable provincial, federal, and occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and standards.
  • Develop, review, and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, manuals, programs, and documentation.
  • Identify safety risks, program gaps, and best-practice opportunities, and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee safety training, orientation, competency tracking, and documentation systems across the organization.
  • Support the establishment and effectiveness of Joint Health and Safety Committees throughout Alterra Experiences Division’s operations.
  • Conduct and oversee safety inspections, audits, hazard assessments, ergonomic assessments, and compliance reviews.
  • Lead or oversee incident investigations and ensure timely reporting, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and verify the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions arising from incidents, audits, inspections, and hazard assessments.
  • Oversee workers' compensation claims management, return-to-work programs, and occupational injury case management.
  • Ensure workers' compensation reporting, premiums, payments, and related financial information are accurate and submitted on time.
  • Provide strategic health and safety advice and support to operational leaders, employees, and senior management.
  • Regularly visit Alterra Experience Division’s operating areas to promote a strong safety culture and verify implementation of health and safety programs.
  • Lead or support emergency preparedness activities, emergency response, and critical incident management involving employees.
  • Notify and advise senior leadership on significant safety risks, compliance issues, emerging trends, and operational impacts.
  • Represent Alterra Experience Divisions with regulatory agencies, workers' compensation boards, industry associations, safety organizations, and other external stakeholders on health and safety matters.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an occupational health & safety role.
  • Demonstrated experience with COR (Certificate of Recognition) certification, including preparing for and leading internal and external audits, developing health and safety management systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining certification requirements.
  • Proven ability to effectively plan and direct the work of the department.
  • Knowledge of worker’s compensation processes and procedures, including WorkSafeBC and WCB Alberta claims management and related legislation.
  • Experience with disability management, incident investigations, workplace inspections and hazard assessment.
  • Willingness to actively participate in continuous professional development.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality of information and records.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in the ski industry, preferred.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, preferred.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary education in a related field.

  • Confidence to interact with all levels of the company in a hub-and-spoke model in which many individuals are remote.
  • Trustworthy, goal-oriented, respectful, and self-directed in completing the core functions of the role.
  • Sees projects through to completion including follow-up on any identified issues.
  • Strong sense of work ethic and accountability, with an ability to function well in a team environment and focus on team success.
  • Effectively prioritize tasks, responsibilities, and goals; use goals to guide actions and create detailed action plans.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Able to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer and other common office equipment on a constant basis.
  • This position is required, at times, to work on evenings, weekends, and holidays based on the needs of the business. 
  • This position may require occasional travel to Alterra Experience Division areas, as well as some travel to industry functions on an occasional basis.
