Atrium Health is seeking an experienced, full-time Advanced Practice Provider specializing in Behavioral Health to provide comprehensive psychiatric and behavioral health services within our growing adult solid organ transplant programs.

This position is open to board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP-BC) and Physician Assistants (PA) who are trained and proficient in the delivery of psychiatric services. The provider will support patients across Atrium Health’s kidney, liver, and heart transplant programs, providing specialized behavioral health care throughout the transplant journey.

Position Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner (NP) Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Nursing Practice
Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in North Carolina
Current board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) through a nationally recognized certifying body
Current prescriptive privileges and DEA license

Physician Assistant (PA) Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program
Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in North Carolina
Current certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Current or pending Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Psychiatry preferred
Current prescriptive privileges and DEA license

Additional Requirements

BLS for Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association required
One or more years of Psychiatry and/or Behavioral Health experience preferred
Experience working with medically complex patient populations preferred
Demonstrated critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to function effectively within multidisciplinary Behavioral Health and Transplant teams

Job Summary

The Behavioral Health Advanced Practice Provider provides specialized psychiatric services to acute and chronically ill patients within Atrium Health’s adult solid organ transplant programs. The provider will assess and address behavioral health factors that may affect transplant candidacy, readiness, treatment adherence, recovery, and long-term outcomes.

Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary transplant team, the APP will help ensure timely access to behavioral health services while supporting whole-person care for transplant patients and living donors.

Essential Functions

Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and behavioral health assessments
Conduct transplant clearance and readiness evaluations
Assess treatment adherence, substance use, and other behavioral health factors relevant to transplant candidacy
Diagnose and manage acute and chronic psychiatric conditions
Develop individualized behavioral health treatment plans
Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications as clinically appropriate
Provide behavioral health assessments and support for living donors
Monitor behavioral health needs of patients before and after transplantation
Utilize standardized depression, anxiety, and other behavioral health screening tools as clinically indicated
Collaborate with psychiatrists, transplant physicians, surgeons, social workers, transplant coordinators, nursing staff, and other multidisciplinary team members
Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment recommendations, and behavioral health resources
Accurately document assessments, treatment plans, interventions, and patient progress within the medical record
Participate in transplant-specific quality improvement initiatives and program development
Serve as a patient advocate and support the integration of behavioral health services throughout the transplant continuum

Physical Requirements

Must possess intact senses of sight, hearing, touch, and finger dexterity
Must speak English fluently and clearly
Must be able to respond appropriately and professionally in stressful or crisis situations
