Description

Under general supervision from the Wastewater Supervisor, performs a variety of specialized, skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the City’s wastewater treatment facility, sewer collection system, and water treatment/distribution facility. 

FLSA status: Non-Exempt.

Continually responsible for safe operation of equipment and proper work methods that are directly related to the safety of co-workers, and the general public. 

Provides construction plan review and technical assistance to both internal and external customers.

Provides assistance in technical specification writing and preparing detailed scope of work submittals. 

Provides work direction to other Section employees on a project basis, as assigned. 

This position will be required to provide stand-by and emergency maintenance for the Section on an as-needed basis. 

Works with other division technicians to provide optimal operating conditions to meet or exceed ADEQ permit requirements. 

Maintains and reviews operational and laboratory data to provide recommendations to the Supervisor for maintaining optimal operations conditions to meet or exceed ADEQ permit requirements. 

Provides training and work instruction under direction of Supervisor or in Supervisor absence. 

Assists with preparation of reports, budgets, and provides input and feedback to team and Supervisor for decision-making.



Knowledge of:
City procurement procedures.
Basic principles of biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
Water/wastewater testing techniques.
Underground utilities and construction techniques.
OSHA underground/confined space standards.
OSHA safe workplace safety procedures.
Computer systems and building and maintaining a database.
Computer system management tools to include queries.
Testing parameters set by ADEQ in the operation of City water and wastewater facilities.
 
Skill in:
Performing maintenance and repair work in sewer system/water system maintenance.
Leading and reviewing the work of maintenance staff in sewer system/water system maintenance.
Reading and interpreting blueprints.
Using hand tools.
Performing pH and dissolved oxygen tests.
Operating vehicles and mechanical equipment.
Following oral and written instructions.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and the public.
Reading, recording, and interpreting gauges and recording devices.
Reading blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
 
Able to lift heavy objects and perform strenuous work.



Wastewater Technician I: 

High School Graduate or GED required. 

Three (3) years experience in water, wastewater, collections, distribution or related industrial field systems operations. 

Commercial Driver’s License, Class B minimum.


Must have level I in all following categories AND Level II in either Wastewater OR Collections applicable to assignment:

ADEQ Water Treatment Operator Certificate

ADEQ Water Distribution Operator Certificate

ADEQ Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate

ADEQ Wastewater Collection Operator Certificate

Non-Arizona equivalent certificates must receive reciprocity within 6 months of hire or promotion.

Require one of the following certifications:

  1. PACP/LACP/MACP Certification (Pipeline, lateral, manhole)
  2. Backflow Prevention
  3. Pesticide Applicator, w/ aquatics endorsement
  4. Electrical training for Non-electricians
  5. Or any other industrial certification pre-approved by Public Works

An employee at the Technician I level shall not be reclassified to the Technician II level until the minimum requirements for Technician II as outlined below are metFor continued employment, the Technician II level must be obtained within 24 months. It is the employee’s responsibility to obtain the training necessary to meet the requirements of the Technician II level within the allotted time.

 

Wastewater Technician II: 

High School Graduate or GED required. 

Four (4) years experience in water, wastewater, collections, distribution or related industrial field. 

Commercial Driver’s License, Class B minimum.

Must have level II in all following categories AND Level III in either Wastewater OR Collections applicable to assignment:


ADEQ Water Treatment Operator Certificate

ADEQ Water Distribution Operator Certificate

ADEQ Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate

ADEQ Wastewater Collection Operator Certificate

Non-Arizona equivalent certificates must receive reciprocity within 6 months of hire or promotion.


 Require two of the following certifications

  1. PACP/LACP/MACP Certification through NASSCO (Pipeline, lateral, manhole)- 24 hr
  2. AZ Dept Agriculture Pesticide Applicator, w/ aquatics endorsement- 18 hrs
  3. NFPA 70 E ARC Flash and energized work certification
  4. Or any other industrial certification pre-approved by Public Works
