Australian Bookkeeper / Assistant Accountant

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Australian Bookkeeper / Assistant Accountant to provide end-to-end bookkeeping, compliance and financial reporting support to Australian businesses and accountants.
This role combines transactional bookkeeping with assistant accounting responsibilities. The successful candidate must have at least five years of hands-on Australian accounting experience and advanced Xero capability.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping
- Manage end-to-end bookkeeping for Australian clients.
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Complete daily and monthly bank reconciliations.
- Process payroll, superannuation, leave entitlements and Single Touch Payroll.
- Maintain general ledgers and prepare journal entries.
- Prepare BAS and IAS workpapers for review and lodgement.
- Manage customer invoicing and supplier payments.
- Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.
Assistant Accounting
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare management accounts and financial reports.
- Complete balance-sheet and general-ledger reconciliations.
- Process accruals, prepayments, depreciation and adjusting journals.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow reporting.
- Prepare workpapers for financial statements and tax returns.
- Support senior accountants with ATO and statutory compliance.
- Identify accounting discrepancies, financial risks and process improvements.
- Assist with multi-entity accounting and intercompany reconciliations.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum five years of Australian bookkeeping or accounting experience.
- Experience supporting Australian accounting firms or businesses.
- Advanced Xero proficiency.
- Strong practical knowledge of Australian accounting and ATO requirements.
- Demonstrated experience with:
- BAS, IAS and GST
- Australian payroll, superannuation and STP
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Bank and balance-sheet reconciliations
- General-ledger maintenance and journal entries
- Month-end close and financial reporting
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent written and verbal English.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines independently.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Highly Desirable
- Xero Certified Advisor status.
- Australian public-practice or outsourced-accounting experience.
- MYOB or QuickBooks Online experience.
- Experience with NetSuite or SAP.
- ASIC compliance experience.
- Knowledge of payroll tax, FBT and Division 7A.
- Multi-entity and intercompany accounting experience.
- Experience reviewing junior bookkeepers' work.
- Exposure to construction, property, professional services or SME clients.
